Another Code Talker dies

BREADSPRINGS — Another Navajo Code Talker who used his native language during World War II to confuse America's enemies has died.

Frank T. Thompson, 87, died June 2 in Breadsprings. Thompson was a U.S. Marine Code Talker and was awarded a Silver Congressional Medal in 2001 for his service in the U.S. Marine Corps as a Code Talker. He was born Sept. 4, 1920, in Crystal. A family gathering will be 6 tonight, June 3, at the Crystal Chapter.

No other information on Thompson’s military service was available this morning.

Jerry C. Begay Sr., died in Albuquerque on Memorial Day, according to a news release from the Navajo Nation Council.

Begay received the Purple Heart, served in Tarawa during the U.S. invasion of the Japanese island and was honorably discharged in 1945.
