Reclaiming the prairie

Mike Whitt holds a compass plant which grows among other native grasses and flowers in a 30-acre field that until recently nurtured corn and soybeans near a condominium complex, background, in Prior Lake, Minn. The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community has transformed about 125 acres of farmland and wetlands back to what it was like when the tribe's ancestors lived off the land. Whitt is the senior environmental specialist for the tribe. [AP Photo]
