Deaths

Halona, Alfred

ST. MICHAELS — Funeral services for Alfred E. Halona, 90, will be 10 a.m., June 7, at the Rollie Mortuary. The Rev. Roger Davis will officiate. Burial will be in St. Michaels Cemetery, St. Michaels. Visitation will be 3-4:30 p.m. at Rollie Mortuary.

Halona died June 3, 2008, in St. Michaels. He was born March 25, 1918, in Tohatchi, into the Salt People Clan for the Near the Water People Clan.

Halona attended Fort Wingate Schools and was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1942 to serve in World War II. He earned a total of 5 awards and medals from the Army. He started working for The Pittsburg and Midway Coal Mining Co. (P&M) as a dragline operator and retired in 1990. While working at the mine, he also served as chapter president for St. Michaels Chapter from 1967-1979 and also served as chapter vice-president. He was a tribal council delegate from 1991-1995, and was one of the members of Education Committee. His hobbies included hunting, ranching, farming, watching the Phoenix Suns basketball games, LA Dodgers baseball games, golf, and traveling and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Katherine Halona; sons, Vernon Halona of St. Michaels, Ronald Halona of St. Michaels; daughters, Gloria Ross of Mesa, Karen Halona of St. Michaels, Sharon Holland of Tempe; brothers, Wallace Halona of Tohatchi, Wilson Halona of Tohatchi; sisters, Winifred Muskett of Tohatchi, Marie Holyan of Tohatchi; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

Halona was preceded in death by his parents, Barney and Annie Halona; sisters, Daisy James, Molly Damon; son, Donald “Dino” Halona; two grandsons.

Pallbearers will be Leland Ross, Deon James, Verwin Halona, Ryan Halona, Jason Touchin, and Ty Beyale.

The family will receive relatives and friends at St. Michaels Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, St. Michaels, following services.

Pena, Ruben

GALLUP — Memorial services for Ruben Pena, 61, will be 10 a.m., Saturday, June 7, at the First Baptist Church, 2112 College Dr., Gallup. The Rev. William Overton and The Rev. Clifford Vanderbush, will officiate. Private disposition will be at a later time.

Pena died June 3, 2008, in Gallup. He was born May 13, 1947, in Gallup.

Pena graduated from Gallup High School. He was employed by Gallup McKinley County Schools, Carbon Coal, and was owner of the Glass Shop. Pena was a avid hunter, loved to garden, and was a die-hard Broncos fan.

Survivors include his wife, Louise Pena of Gallup; daughters, Pamela Pena, Madalyn Pena, both of Gallup; brothers, John Pena of Gallup, Joe Pena of Las Vegas, Nev., Ivan Pena, James Pena, Carl Pena, all of Gallup; sisters, Marlene Martinez of Tempe, Kathy Pena-Ramirez of Gallup.

Pena was preceded in death by his parents, Jose M. and Ramoncita Pena.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Indian Hills Elementary School caffeteria, following services.

Silvers, Colleen

CHICHILTAH, N.M. — Funeral services for Colleen Rose Silvers, 55, will be 10 .m. June 7, at the Jesus Christ of Latter-days Saints Stake Center, Gallup. Bishop Michael Jones will officiate. Burial will be in family cemetery, Chichiltah. Visitation will be at Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Stake Center from 8-9:30 a.m.

Silvers died June 3, 2008, in Gallup. She was born March 5, 1953, in Zuni, into the Folded Arms People Clan for the Red Running Into the Water People Clan.

Silvers attended the LDS Placement Program for 9 years. She graduated from Panquitch High School, Panquitch, Utah, and attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. She worked at GIMC as a lab tech for 18 years. Silvers was a member of the Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Church. She enjoyed reading, shopping, arts and crafts, and watching movies. She loved her children.

Survivor include her sons, Ian Cole Silver Fox of Albuquerque, Kyle Silver Fox of Manuelito, Roman Silver Fox of Manuelito; daughters, Mycah Silver Fox of Albuquerque, Robyn Silver Fox of Manuelito; mother, Deswood Benally of Naschitti; brother, Stanley Etsitty of Canada; sisters, Mary Platero of Montezuma Creek, UT., Rhonda Mallahan of Page, Norma E. Muskett of Gallup, Victoria Brendon of Albuquerque, Janice Chee of Albuquerque.

Silvers was preceded in death by her father, Stanley Etsitty; mother, Louise J. Benally.

Pallbearers will be Ian Cole Silver Fox, Roman Silver Fox, Kyle Silver Fox, Derek Smith, Jemie Platero, and Stanley Etsitty.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Chichiltah Chapter, Jones Ranch, N.M., following services.

Rollie Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Wilson, Joe

THOREAU — Funeral services for Joe Wilson, 73, will be 10 a.m. June 7, at the Thoreau Church of God. Russell R. Barker will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Gallup.

Wilson died June 6, 2008, in Thoreau. He was born Oct. 10, 1934, in Thoreau, into the Sleepy Rock People Clan for the Two Came To the Water People Clan.

Wilson attended Crownpoint Boarding School and graduated from Wingate High School in 1954. He attended Haskell Indian School. He worked as a Navajo Police Officer from 1956-1959. Wilson was a rancher and then served as a minister for 20 years.

Survivors include his brother, Clarence Martinez Sr. of Smith Lake; sisters, Rosebelle Sanders of Thoreau, Louise Johnson of Manuelito, Irene Saunders of Thoreau, Dorothy Wilson of Thoreau, Martha Gonzalez of Thoreau, Ella Wilson of Thoreau.

Wilson was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Bah Wilson; brothers, Robert, Juan, Leonard Wilson; grandparents, Little Charley, Say-bah Charley, (Pat) Jake Jose, Hanabah Francise.

Pallbearers will be Airman James Barker, Stewart Wilson, Myron Wilson, Davidson Calladitto, Richard Thomas, Pete Becenti, Larry Martinez, and Clarence Martinez Jr.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Thoreau Church of God Fellowship, following services.
