Deaths

Begay, Joe Sr.

KLAGETOH — Funeral services for Joe Begay Sr., 80, will be 10 a.m., Monday, July 21, at the Presbyterian Church, Ganado. Burial will be in Community Cemetery, Klagetoh. Visitation will be 9 a.m., one hour prior to services.

Begay died July 17, 2008, in Phoenix. He was born March 18, 1928, in Sunrise, into the Honey Combed People Clan for the Towering House People Clan.

Begay was employed with the Marine Buse, Barstow, Calif. He was a member of the Navajo Area School Board, Planning Committee for Klagetoh Chapter, ONEO as a supervisor Traditional Herblist, Rancher.

Survivors include his sons, Joe Begay Jr., Jerry Begay, both of Window Rock, Terry Begay of Greasewood; daughters, Juanita J. Begay, Jenny Begay, both of Window Rock, Winona J. Begay of Phoenix, Caroline Begay of Gallup, Carol Mark of Crystal, Meretta Robbins of Tuba City; sisters, Rita Yazzie of Klagetoh, Stella Yazzie of Greasewood, Betty Dallas of Tuba City, Angela Brown, Mabel Redhouse, both of Calif.; 24 grandchildren.

Begay was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda K. Begay; parents, Raymond and Mary Begay; brothers, Ben Tsosie, Ben Ambrose, Henry Begay, Harry Begay, Roy Anderson.

Pallbearers will be family members.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Klagetoh Chapter House, following services.

Long, Maxine

ROCK SPRINGS — Services for Maxine Florence Long, 77, will be 1 p.m., Monday, July 21, at the Bible Navajo-Wildcat Mission Church, Blackhat, N.M. Burial will be in Gallup City Cemetery.

Long died July 17, 2008, in Albuquerque. She was born April 30, 1931, in Rehoboth.

Long was a seamstress most of her life.
Survivors include her daughters, Evangeline Long of Albuquerque, Joanne Long of Rock Springs, Bernadine Wayne of Albuquerque, Leola Long of Albuquerque, Debra Long of Church Rock, Mildred Chavez of Chicago, Ill.; sons, Lloyd Long of Rock Springs, Roland Long of Rock Springs, Johnny Raymond Talley Jr., of Luppe; sisters, Grace Parker of Manuelito, Jane Becenti of Del Norte, Colo., Sarah Nez, Judy Dixon of Utah, Gloria Parker of Shiprock, Angeline Bodheimer of Albuquerque, Lillian Miller, Marie Miller of Borrego Pass; brothers, Lawrence Miller of Denver, Colo., Louie Miller of Gallup, Bobby Miller of Borrego Pass; 26 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren.
Long was preceded in death by her husband, Leo H. Long; parents, Max Millr, Irene Adakai Miller; son, Vernon Long; brothers, Francis Miller, Donald Miller; sister, LaBerta Parker.

Pallbearers will be Herman Long, Lawrence Miller, Vicenti Martinez Jr., Richard Long Jr., Eugene Charley Jr., Lewis Becenti.

Pine, Irwin

PAGE, Ariz. — Funeral services for Irwin Pine, 59, were 1 p.m., today, July 19, at the Page Cemetery. The Rev. George Begay officiated.

Pine died July 16, 2008, in Flagstaff. He was born Dec. 15, 1948, in Fort Defiance.

Pine was the son of Nelson and Ethelyn Pine. He attended Phoenix Indian School and graduated. After graduating, he attended Haskell Jr. College for 2 years, graduated and received his major in painting. Pine worked as a painter for many years to care for his family that lived in Lechee, Ariz. His hobbies included playing cards, roping steers, coaching little league. He had many talents that included jewelry makings, he could make anything out of wood. His interest was watching old movies like Bonanza during his spare time. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Pine; sons, Thomas Pine, Darrell Pine; daughter, Lorretta Goatson; brothers, Tommy Pine, Kee Pine, Raymond Pine; sisters, Marie Lee, Carol Manuelito, Pauline Fred, Marilyn Chapela, Beverly Henry; seven grandchildren.

Pine was preceded in death by his brother, Kee Pine; parents, Nelson and Ethelyn Pine.

Yazzie, Elvera

HOUCK — Funeral services for Elvera Jean Yazzie, 38, will be 10 a.m., Monday, July 21, at the St. John Evenglist Church, Houck. The Rev. Berard will officiate. Burial will be in Houck Community Cemetery, Houck.

Yazzie died July 11, 2008, in Gallup. She was born Jan. 25, 1970, in Ganado, into the Towering House People Clan for the Honey Comb People Clan.

Yazzie attended Sanders Elementary and Mid School. She also attended Holbrook High School. Yazzie was very artistic, loved fishing, knitting, and a little rug weaving. She was also learning to make Navajo baskets, and loved doing bead work.
Survivors include her daughter, Elvina J. James of Houck; parents, Paulson J. James of Good News Mission Church, Mamie R. Gruber of Houck; brothers, Jerome D. James of Houck, Randy P. James of Sanders, Renny P. James of Kirk, Colo.; sister, Laura Bahe of Tenn.

Yazzie was preceded in death by her grandparents, Alice Luz, Francis Luz, Robertson James, Florence James.

Pallbearers will be Jerome D. James, Jerome J. James, Randy P. James, Leon Lee, Candace R. James, Natasha James.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Houck Chapter House, following services.
