GALLUP — The McKinley County Commission will be having an emergency session at 2 p.m. today to approve property tax rates for the next fiscal year.

The session, which is open to the public, will be held at the county commission chambers in the new courthouse.
Commission Chairman Dave Dallago Jr. said the commission is required each year to approve property tax rates for the county.

“The assessor’s office asked that we hold this special session since we have to have the new rates into the state by October 1,” Dallago said.

He said that he expected that the new rates will show a slight increase in property taxes for next year, primarily because of new taxes imposed by the state. The rates will also take into consideration various mil levies that have been approved by the county and city governments, as well as the local school district and other school districts over the years.

“Someone who owns a house valued at $150,000 will probably be seeing their taxes increase by about $20 or $21 next year,” he said.
