Grants Food pantry seeking donations Copyright © 2008 GRANTS The Community Food Pantry is seeking
donations to help offset increased need by families in Cibola County
and less food being sent by feeder organizations, such as the New
Mexico Food Bank Association, Reuben Thomas, head of the pantry
said. We are seeing an increase of about 10 percent,
which is about 20 to 30 families signing up, he said At the same time the amount of food that is coming
in to be provided to the public is less, largely because of the
increase in gasoline prices. We have 1,800 families signed up in Cibola County. And with the number of families in the county,
that is a very large number, he said. While the pantry is seeking donations such as canned
meats and vegetables, it is also seeking monetary donations to be
able to purchase perishable items and produce. The pantry recently celebrated its five year anniversary. The pantry started out in a building near the First
United Methodist Church and soon moved in to the building where
it is now located, at 222 E. Stephens. The mortgage was paid off
and the pantry now owns the building outright with the only expenses
it has being utilities. Several churches support the pantry by providing 25-30
volunteers a week, Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday is First United Methodist
Church, Tuesday is the Church of Christ, Thursday is First Baptist
Church. New Life Assembly of God also provides volunteers and several
other churches assist by providing donations. All cash donations are tax deductible, Thomas said. We are a nonprofit organization, he said. To contact reporter Jim Tiffin call (505) 285-4560 or e-mail: jtiffin.independent@yahoo.com. |
