Jackson Arthur

TOHATCHI — Funeral services for Jackson James Arthur, 70, will be 10 a.m. May 5, at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Tohatchi. Fr. John MIttelstadt, OFM and Fr. Joe Redinbo, OFM, will officiate. Burial will be in Tohatchi Cemetery. A rosary will be recited at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Tohatchi at 6 p.m.

Arthur died April 30 in Albuquerque. He was born June 15, 1938, in Bisti, into the Towering House People Clan for the Bitter Water People Clan.
Arthur graduated from Phoenix Indian High School in 1958, attended Laney College in 1963-1966. He was in the U.S. Army from June 1959 to Feb. 1962. Arthur worked as a proofreader, composer, journey man at the Oakland Tribune and San Francisco Examiner. In 1971 he worked in Gallup in Behavioral Health as a couselor and NCI supervisor.

Survivors include his wife, Julia Arthur; sons, Vincent Arthur of Fort Defiance, Randy Arthur of Tohatchi, Chester Arthur of Farmington, Woody Arthur Jr. of Mussula, Mon., Timothy Arthur of Farmington; daughter, Catherine Arthur of Tohatchi, Roxanne Arthur of Bloodfield, Sandra Arthur of Boise, Id., Colleen Arthur of Boise, Id.; brother, Harrison Nez of Farmington; sisters, Lillian Lee of Aneth, UT., Genevieve Nez of Phoenix, Caroline Nez of Rock Point, Anna Mae Nez of Farmington; 19 grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Arthur was preceded in death by his brothers, John Arthur Sr., Leonard Arthur Sr., Ned Arthur, William Arthur Sr., Woody Arthur Sr.; parents, Tall School Boy Nez, Exkinbah.

Pallbearers will be family members.

Rollie Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Gilson R. Betone Sr.

WHITEHORSE LAKE — Funeral services for Gilson R. Betone Sr., 73, will be 8 a.m. May 5, at the Rollie Mortuary, Gallup. Pastor Dennis Keith will officiate. Burial will be in Santa Fe National Veteran Cemetery.

Betone died April 29, 2008, in Crownpoint. He was born Jan. 25, 1935, in Crownpoint, into the Cove People Clan for the Meadow People Clan.

Betone had his primary education at Whitehorse Lake Day School, and Crownpoint Boarding School. He then went on to Haskell Indian School in Lawrence, Kan. In 1957 he was drafted into the USA. He stayed mostly at stateside because he was drafted during peace time. Betone was honorably discharged in 1958. In 1961 he started working for the Navajo Tribe as a Navajo Police Officer and worked with senior citizens as a driver for Whitehorse Lake Chapter. He retired from Navajo Nation in 1963.

Survivors include his wife, Isabelle Betone of Crownpoint; sons, Gilson Betone Jr., Patrick Betone, both of Alamo, N.M., Jason Betone, Udell Betone, Harrison Mescal Jr., all of Crownpoint, Abel Mescal of Albuquerque; daughters, Kathleen Betone, Pamela Betone, Yvette Betone, all of Alamo, Kristle Mescal, Monica Mescal, both of Crownpoint, Rebecca Belin of Phoenix, Valerie Belin of Phoenix; brothers, Earl Betone Jr., of Whitehorse Lake, Franklin Betone, Wilbert Bittony, both of Thoreau, Paul Betone Sr., of Eagle Butte S.D.; sisters, Grace Benally of Gallup, Bonnie Betone, Charlene Betone, Martina Betone, all of Whitehorse Lake, Helena Woodward of Crownpoint; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Betone was preceded in death by his parents, Earl Betone Sr., Annie Betone; brothers, Gilbert Betone, Ernest Betone.

Pallbearers will be Jason Betone, Garyald Stuart Benally, Ernie Hudson, Gilson R. Betone Jr., Michael Benally, and Kevin Betone.

Rollie Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Marie Henio-Herrera

COOLIDGE — Services for Marie Shirley Henio-Herrera, 67, will be 10 a.m. May 5, at the Elem Haven Church, Coolidge. Burial will be in family land, Coolidge. Pastors Henry Orton and Tommy Henio will officiate.

Herrera died April 29, 2008, in Albuquerque. She was born April 20, 1941, in Rehoboth.

Survivors include her husband, Joe Herrera of Coolidge; children, Don Herrera of Santee, Calif., Dawn Herrera of Coolidge, Joe Herrera Jr. of Kirtland, Tom Herrera of Yaytahey, Tex Herrera of Coolidge; sisters, Madline Chavez of Coolidge, Grace Cloud of Coolidge, Irene Notah of Hunters Point; brother, David Henio of Smith Lake; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Herrera was preceded in death by her parents, Tom Henio and Ada Henio.

Pallbearers will be Cody Herrera, Michael Herrera, Christopher Herrera, Fernando Lucero, Nathaniel Notah, Edison Chapo Jr., Walter Cloud, and Darrell Henio.

Compassion Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
