Artist Pablita Velarde, of Santa Clara Pueblo, paiinted this scene of men herding horses as part of the Works Progress Administration program. Velarde, just 19 when she was commissioned by Bandelier National Monument during the New Deal, went on to become the most prominent femaile Indian easel painter in the nation. [AP photo]
