Navajo Code Talker dies
on Memorial Day

WINDOW ROCK (AP) — A Navajo Code Talker who used his native language during World War II to confuse America’s enemies died on Memorial Day. He was 83.

Jerry C. Begay Sr., who died in Albuquerque, was awarded a silver congressional medal of honor in 2001 for his service in the U.S. Marine Corps as a Code Talker, according to a news release from the Navajo Nation Council on Wednesday. No cause of death was given.

Begay served in Tarawa during the U.S. invasion of the Japanese island and was honorably discharged in 1945.

Begay was active in the Navajo Code Talkers Association.
