Lee Garcia

GRANTS — Funeral Mass for Lee Garcia, 86, will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, April 1, at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church. The Very Rev. Alberto Avella will be the celebrant. Burial will be in Grants Memorial Park, with full military honors by the VFW Lodge 3228. A rosary will be recited 7 p.m., tonight, March 31, at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church.

Garcia died March 27, 2009, in Grants. He was born Aug. 2, 1922, in Grants.

Garcia graduated from Grants Union High School and served in Europe at the end of World War II.

Honorably discharged from the Army, he returned home to Grants and was a prospector in the early days of the uranium boom. His partnership with Henry Andrews and Dumas Hartin the Blue Peak Mine produced the first uranium ore to be milled from the Grants area. He owned and operated a roofing business, a construction company, and was known to be a lifelong staunch Republican.

He knew local and state politics well, but the highlights of his political career was when he was invited and attended the inauguration of Ronald Regan.

Survivors include his children, Peggy Borthagaray of Grants, Carol Herrera of Bluewater, Leroy Garcia of Grants, Andy Garcia of Magdalena, Steve Garcia of Albuquerque; 20 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren.

Garcia was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Garcia; second wife, Ida Garcia; son, Alvin Garcia; parents, Emilio Garcia, Josephita Baca Garcia; sister, Emma Spidle.

Pallbearers will be Mark Garcia, Paul Garcia, Eric Garcia, Marty Borthagaray, Jo Jo Herrera, Frank Aguilar Jr.

Yvonne Goltz

GRANTS — Funeral Mass for Yvonne T. Goltz, 73, will be 10 a.m., Thursday, April 2, at St. Vivian’s Catholic Church, Milan. The Very Rev. Alberto Avella will be the celebrant.Burial will be in Grants Memorial Park. A rosary will be recited 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 1, at St. Vivian’s Catholic Church.

Goltz died March 29, 2009, in Albuquerque. She was born Feb. 4, 1936, in Underwood, N.D.

Goltz celebrated her 52nd wedding anniversary in June. She was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother.

Survivors include her husband, Glyn Goltz of Grants; children, Timothy Goltz of Grants, Kent Goltz of Grants, Melody Ramkowsky of Tijeras, NM, Nicoll Goltz of San Rafael; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Goltz was preceded in death by her parents, William Meier and Vivian Louser Meier; sister, June Boots; brother, Blain Meier.

Pallbearers will be Tiffany Goltz, Andi Goltz, Brandi Goltz, Nicole Avila, Alicia Avila.

Annie James

GAMERCO — Services for Annie T. James, 74, will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, April 1, at St. Francis Church, Gallup. The Rev. Eduardo (Lalo) Espinosa, OFM will officiate. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. Visitation will be 1-4:30 p.m., today, March 31, at Rollie Mortuary. A rosary will be recited 9-10 a.m., Wednesday, April 1, at St. Francis Catholic Church.

James died March 29, 2009, in Gallup. She was born April 18, 1934, in Pine Springs, into the Saline Water People Clan for the Black Streak of Forest People Clan.

James enjoyed crossword puzzles, sewing, planting, and was an avid fan of the boys Bengal basketball.

Survivors include her son, Irvin James; daughters, Erleen Thomas, Marjorie J. Nelson, Evelyne James, Kathy James, R. Anne James, Sandra James, Zandra James; brother, Art Lee Thomas; sisters, Mary Cowboy, Mary Six, Dorothy James; 23 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren.

James was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Uilnibah Thomas; brothers, Ralph Thomas, Ray Thomas; sisters, Mary Silversmith, Mary Silversmith, Lucy Begay; daughter, Lorriane James.

Pallbearers will be Raymond Becenti Jr., Corey Denetdale, Derrick Lee, Donovan Lee, Randall Spencer, Ryan Spencer.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Tsayatoh Chapter House, 5 p.m., tonight, March 31.

Gary Lohkamp

GALLUP — Services are pending for Gary Robert Lohkamp, 66.

Lohkamp died Sunday, March 29, 2009, in Gallup. He was born May 27, 1942, in Portland, Ore.

John Sam

TOHATCHI — Funeral services for John H. Sam, 76, will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, April 1, at United Pentecostal Church, Tohatchi. The Rev. Jerry Eastridge will officiate. Burial will be in family land, Mexican Springs. Visitation will be 3-6 p.m., today, March 31, 2009, at Rollie Mortuary.
Sam died March 27, 2009, in Mexican Springs.

He was born Aug. 15, 1932, in Naschitti, into the Hairy People Clan for the Near the Water People Clan.

Sam attended Wingate Boarding School. He was retired from Chuska Boarding School in 1997 after 35 years as a maintenance man. After retirement he enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Lorraine Sam of Mexican Springs; sons, Bernard Sam of Thoreau, Sampson Sam of Gallup, Frederick Sam of Mexican Springs; daughters, Loretta Plummer, Floretta Sam, Amoretta Sam, Erika Sam, Valetta Sam of Mexican Springs, Carletta Kinlicheeny of Albuquerque, Evangeline Hammitt of Gamerco; brother, James Sam of Seattle, Wash.; sister, Alice Moore of Mexican Springs; 35 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Sam Billie and Helen Billie; brothers, Tom Sam, Robert Sam, Willie Sam.

Pallbearers will be Sampson Sam, Randall Plummer, Daniel Plummer, Pryor Kuhn, Brandy Sam, Bradley Tom.

Tommy Tate

GRANTS — Services for Tommy Doyle Tate, 78, were 10 a.m., today, March 31, at Compassion Mortuary. Burial was in Grants Memorial Park with full military honors by Fort Bliss Army Base. The Rev. Lonnie Jordan officiated.

Tate died March 27, 2009, in Grants. He was born April 10, 1930, in Quanah, Texas.

Tate was retired from the US Army as Staff Sergeant First Class, serving in Korea and Vietnam. He lived in Mentmore before moving to Grants.

Survivors include his children, Michael Tate of Copperas Cove, Texas, Randy Tate of Arizona, Thomas Tate of Oklahoma; one grandchild.

Tate was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Mae Tate; parents, Thomas Doyle Tate, Molle Bell Grooms Tate; sister, MaryJo Tate.
