Augustin Chavez

GALLUP — Funeral Mass for Augustin “Tin” Chavez, 80, will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 20, at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Gallup. The Rev. Eduardo Espinosa will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., tonight, May 19, at Rollie Mortuary.

Chavez died May 16, 2009, in Grants. He was born May 28, 1928, in Gallup.

Chavez was retired from the City of Gallup. His hobbies included reading, playing guitar, listening to Spanish music.

Survivors include his sons, Pedro Chavez, Paul Chavez, Manuel Chavez, Juan Chavez, Augustin Chavez Jr.; step-sons, Philbert Pablito, Raymond Pablito, Earl Pablito, Euddell Lementino; daughters, Margaret Moreno, Gloria Chavez, Sally Romero, Rosie Chavez, Cecilia Guererrero, Yolanda Chavez; brothers, Abram Chavez, Alfonso Chavez, Frank Chavez, Richard Chavez; 27 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren.

Chavez was preceded in death by his wife, Emily Chavez; parents, Brigido and Arlene Chavez; sister, Pasquala “Pat” Mecale; son, David Chavez; daughter, Antonita Chavez; one grandson.

Pallbearers will be Joe Francis, Philip Mecale Sr., Michael Perez Sr., Jason Lementino, Raymond Pablito, Douglas Palmer Jr.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Community Service Center, Gallup, following services.

Rollie Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Herbert Freeland Jr.

REHOBOTH — Services for Herbert Vern Freeland Jr., 49, will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 20, at Crownpoint Christian Reformed Church. The Rev. Randy L. Freeland will officiate. Burial will be in Crownpoint Community Cemetery.

Freeland died May 15, 2009, in Phoenix. He was born Feb. 5, 1960, in Rehoboth, into the Edge Water People Clan for the Two Who Comes to Water People Clan.

Freeland graduated from Crownpoint High School in 1978.

Survivors include his companion, Henrietta Tewa of Phoenix; mother, Steila M. Freeland of Crownpoint; brother, Darryll Freeland of Phoenix; sisters, Roberta Freeland of Crownpoint, Alberta Freeland of Crownpoint, Mildred Ross of Phoenix, Margaret Freeland Teesateskie of Cherokee, N.C.
Freeland was preceded in death by his father, Herbert V. Freeland Sr.; grandparents, Vern Freeland Sr., Phoebe M. Freeland, Tom Jim, Elsie Jim.

Pallbearers will be Darryll Freeland, Houston Ross, Fredrick Freeland, Lance Martin, Ernest Abeita, Kendrick Freeland.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Crownpoint Chapter House, following services.

Thomas Silversmith

RED LAKE, Ariz. — Services for Thomas Silversmith, 68, will be 10 a.m., Thursday, May 21, at Assembly of God Family Center, Fort Defiance.

Silversmith died May 14, 2009, in Blanding, Utah. He was born July 18, 1942, in Fort Defiance, into the Red Streak into the Water People Clan for the Person that Walks Around You People Clan.

Silversmith graduated from Gallup High in 1959. He was employed in Cleveland, Ohio, a welder and draftsman for a ship designer in Las Angeles, Calif., a boiler welder N.F.P.I in Navajo, and a C.D.K. Contract welder. He attended Bible College in Flagstaff in 1965 and was a Red Lake Chapter Grazing officer. His hobbies included being a rancher, doing carpentry, building furniture, mechanical work, and reading. He was always helping the community and was a church member in Pine Hill.

Survivors include his sons, Sampson James, Ephrain Silversmith of Navajo; step-daughter, Verlene Nez of Navajo; brothers, Edward Silversmith, Larry Silver Smith; sisters, Nancy Wauneka, Bernice Silversmith.

Silversmith was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest T. Silversmith, Bessie Silversmith; daughters, Racheal Silversmith, Beth Sheba; brother, George Silversmith; grandparents, Shay Milford, Margret Milford, Little Silversmith, Adza Aholwotsid Silversmith.

Pallbearers will be Walter Harry, Edward Silversmith, Austin Wauneka, Kando Wauneka, Bryant Etsitty, John Silversmith.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Fort Defiance Fellowship Hall, following services.

Brett Williams

WINDOW ROCK — Services are pending for Brett “Trog” Louis Williams, 29.

Williams died Sunday, May 17, 2009, in Window Rock. He was born Oct. 20, 1979, in Fort Defiance.

Rollie Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
