Billy Cornfield Jr.

BURNSIDE — Services for Billy Gene Cornfield Jr., 60, will be 1 p.m., Thursday, May 28, at All Saints Mission, Ganado. Brother Paul O’Brian will officiate. Burial will be in community cemetery, Ganado.

Cornfield died May 23, 2009, in Fort Defiance. He was born April 13, 1949, in Fort Defiance, into the Salt People Clan for the Red Running Into the Water People Clan.

Cornfield attend Intermountains school. He learned many skills and loved fixing automobiles. He served in the army from 1970-1972. His favorite hobby was ranching.

Survivors include his wife, Carol M. Cornfield of Ganado; son, Patrick James of Ganado; daughter, Brenda James of Ganado; brother, Ambrose Cornfield of Fort Defiance; sisters, Pauline Cornfield of Tuba City, Elizabeth Werito of Fort Defiance, Evelyn Hardy of Ganado, Rose Lynda Tsosie of Yahtahey; five grandchildren.

Cornfield was preceded in death by his father, Billy Cornfield; mother, Susie Bia.

Pallbearers will be family members.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Ganado Chapter House, following services.

Donald Walker

DURANGO, Colo. — Donald G. Walker, 85, died May 24, 2009, in Durango. He was born Aug. 21, 1923, in Sedalia, Mo.

Walker grew up in Portales and was attending college there when the attack on Pearl Harbor occurred. He enlisted in the Navy and became a naval aviator serving as a dive bomber pilot on the Atlantic coast protecting tankers against submarine attack. After the war he finished his teaching degree, married and moved to Farmington. Walker and his wife bought Crownpoint Trading Company on the Navajo Reservation in 1947. He and his mother ran the store. He became fluent in the Navajo language and knew many of the traders in the eastern part of the reservation. Walker was a self taught general contractor and built 3 homes in New Mexico. When he and his wife sold the store in 1972, they moved to their farm in the north Animas valley, where they had built their own dream home. He and his family enjoyed exploring the jeep trails and mining camps of the San Juan Mountains where they built a summer cabin, traveling and entertaining friends.

Survivors include his daughter, Lynne Martin, of Gallup; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

Walker was preceded in death by his daughter; wife, Audrey Moore.
