Corey Ahasteen

LOW MOUNTAIN — Funeral services for Corey Lavato Ahasteen, 19, will be 10 a.m., Thursday, June 11, at the Potter’s House, Chinle. The Rev. Artie Aragon will officiate. Burial will be in family land, Low Mountain.

Ahasteen died June 7, 2009, in Flagstaff. He was born June 12, 1989, in Chinle, into the Towering House People Clan for the Bitter Water People Clan.

Ahasteen attended school in Low Mountain, Chinle, Pinon and San Juan College in Farmington. He was an artist, poet and “dreamer”. He was so proud and happy to be a first time expecting father.

Survivors include his companion, Jordan Begay; parents, Pamela Ahasteen, Curtis Mitchell Sr.; brothers, Koley Kanuho, Isaiah Kanuho, Toney Kanuho, Julian Ahasteen, Cameron Mitchell, Mykah Mitchell, Curtis Mitchell Jr., Miles Kanuho; sisters, Arayah Mitchell-Cly, Ashley Ahasteen, Tinesha Kanuho; grandparents, Arletta Ahasteen, Irene Mitchell.

Ahasteen was preceded in death by his grandparents, Charles Mitchell Sr., Rosemary Lee, Jimmie Ahasteen; great-grandfather, Arlie Ahasteen.

Pallbearers will be Anthony Ahasteen, Fredrick Atene, Dewayne Atene, Tyrol Chee, Cameron Mitchell, Cameron Yazzie.

The family will receive relatives and friends at NHA House #15, Low Mountain, Ariz., following services.

Gene Lewis

GALLUP — Services are pending for Gene Lewis, 85.

Lewis died June 8, 2009. He was born Oct. 17, 1923, in End, Okla.

Betty Powell

NAMPA, Idaho. — Services for Betty L. Framton Powell, will be 11 a.m., June 11, at Nampa First Church of the Nazarene, Nampa, Idaho, 601 11th Ave. So., Nampa. The Rev. Bob Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Caldwell, Id. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., tonight, June 10, at Alsip and Persons Funeral Chapel, 404 10th Av. So., Nampa.

Powell was born March 22, 1923, in Alliance, Neb.

Powell was educated in Wyoming and Nebraska. She graduated from Pasadena College in 1950 with a BA degree in Religion and Social Studies.

In 1981, the family moved to Gallup and Powell worked as a missionary to the Navajo Indians. In 1993, the family moved to Idaho. She was an elder in the Church of the Nazarene and a member of Nampa First Church of the Nazarene in Nampa.

Survivors include her husband, Dr. Frank Powell; son, Richard Farmington; brothers, Robert Miller, Joe Miller, Jim Miller; three grandchildren.

Powell was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce Farmington; children, Elizabeth, Ester, Robert; six sisters, five brothers.

The family will receive relatives and friends 6-8 p.m., tonight, June 10, at Alsip and Persons Funeral Chaplain.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Twin Butte Church of the Nazarene, PO Box 566, Mentmore, NM, 87319.

Joseph Secatero

NAVAJO — Funeral services for Joseph Gail Secatero, 14, will be 11 a.m., Thursday, June 11, at Assembly of God Church, Fort Defiance. The Rev. James Bennett Jr., will officiate. Burial will be in family plot, Red Lake. Visitation will be Assembly of God Church, Fort Defiance.

Secatero died June 6, 2009, in Durango, Colo. He was born Sept. 22, 1994, in Fort Defiance, into the Honey Comb Rock People Clan for the Two Came to the Water People Clan.

Secatero attended Navajo Middle School. He enjoyed playing basketball, football, playstation 2, drawing, hunting, camping, spending time with family and friends, watching NBA, NFL, and wrestling. He was a true Chicago Bears and Boston Celtics fan. Secatero will be missed and always remembered.

Survivors include his parents, Leta M. Secatero, Jimmy R. Secatero Sr.; brothers, Jimmy R. Secatero Jr., Jeff Begay Jr.; sister, Winona Secatero; grandmother, Pasqualita Kenny.

Secatero was preceded in death by his great-great-great-grandparents, Joe and Hasbah Gail; great-great-grandfather, Roy L. Kenny Sr.; grandfathers, Corey Kenny, Milton Kenny, Jasper Kenny.

Pallbearers will be Nevin Poyer, Phillson Wauneka, Aljerino Tsedain, Jason Wauneka, Kevin Hardy, Guy Tsosie.

Betty Yazzie

SUPERMAN CANYON — Services for Betty J. Yazzie, 54, will be 10 a.m., Thursday, June 11, at Cope Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in City Cemetery.

Yazzie died May 8, 2009, in Phoenix. She was born Jan. 1, 1955, in Gallup, into the Meadow People Clan for the Towering House People Clan.

Survivors include her husband, Leonard Yazzie; daughter, Matilda James; father, Albert Johnson Sr.; brother, Fabian James; sisters, Nancy Johnson, Sarah Nelson Begay; two grandchildren.

Yazzie was preceded in death by her mother, Grace James.

Pallbearers will be Faron Nelson, Aaron Nelson, Steve Francisco, Steve Francisco Jr., Toby Jones, Ryan Begay.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Nancy and Sarah residence, 225 C Superman Canyon Rd., following services.

Cope Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
