Lorraine Begay

TWO GREY HILLS — Funeral services for Lorraine M. Begay, 81, will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 1, at Christian Reformed Church, Toadlena. Interment will be at the family cemetery, Two Grey Hills. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m., tonight, June 30, at Desert View Funeral Home, Shiprock.

Begay died Saturday, June 27, 2009, in Albuquerque. She was born into the Mud People Clan for the Salt People Clan.

Survivors include her children, Duane Yazzie of Shiprock, Tim Yazzie of Two Grey Hills, Erma Yazzie of La Cresenta, Calif., Larissa Jackson of Clarkesville, Ga., Ned Begay Jr. of Gilbert, Ariz., Marie Begay of San Diego, Calif; sister, Mary Hunt of Two Grey Hills; eight grandchildren.

Begay was preceded in death by her husband, Ned N. Begay; son, Loren Begay; brothers, Richard Mike, Sterling Mike, Hoskie Mike; sister, Dorothy Mike.

Begay worked as a Navajo translator for Rev. Kobus, a Christian Reformed Missionary at the age of fifteen. Her work for the lord continued throughout her life touching lives in Brigham, Utah where she served as a dorm parent and youth leader to many young men and women. Later in life, she worked as a senior companion to those in the Sheep Springs, Newcomb, Two Grey Hills, Toadlena, and Sanostee area. She was a constant prayer warrior who remained strong in her faith expressed her love to many people she met along her life’s path. Begay was an honored mother, friend, sister and grandmother. Her genuine love will be missed.

Monica Cordova

ALBUQUERQUE — Memorial service for Monica Jane Cordova, 53, will be 1 p.m., today, June 30, at Gabaldon Mortuary, 1000 Old Coors Rd. SW Albuquerque.

Cordova died Friday, June 26, 2009. She was born sept. 5, 1955, in Albuquerque.

Cordova was the oldest daughter and was raised in Gallup. She graduated from Gallup High School in 1973. During a highly successful career in Hotel Management, she received several awards and recognition including Manager of the Year Award, and awards for Best Citizenship and Law enforcement recognition from Rio Rancho, for assistance in an Amber Alert recovery. Cordova had a big heart and would help anyone who was in need. She was an Angel who took the hard road on earth, so that she could take the easy road in heaven.

Survivors inlcude her daughter, Angelica Schaaf –Rayl of Rio Rancho; parents, Maurice and Elizabeth Cordova of Albuquerque; siblings, Joe Cordova of Annapolis, MD and Albuquerque, Mike Cordova of Grants, Yolanda Fernandez of Albuquerque, Yvonne Rimbert of Colorado Springs, CO.; four grandchildren.

Florence Damon

ASAAYI — Funeral services for Florence C. Damon, 101, were 10 a.m., today, June 30, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Tohatchi. Burial will be in family land, Asaayi. Damon died June 25, 2009, in Farmington. She was born March 23, 1908, in Tohatchi.

Karl Katenay Sr.

IYANBITO — Services are pending for Karl W. Katenay Sr., 61.

Katenay died Friday, June 26, 2009,in Albuquerque. He was born Nov. 23, 1947, in Iyanbito, into the Towering House People Clan for the Red Running Into the Water People Clan.

Rollie Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Josiah Thomas

ALBUQUERQUE — Funeral services for Josiah J. Thomas, 11 months old, will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 1, at Rollie Mortuary, Gallup.

The Rev. Jerry Baker will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Gallup.

Thomas died June 24, 2009, in Albuquerque. He was born July 20, 2008, in Gallup, into the Water Flows Together People Clan for the Towering House People clan.

Thomas loved music, playing with this toys, smile, and laugh. He enjoyed being driven around in his wagon.

Survivors include his mother, Natalie James of Coyote Canyon; step-father, Mitchell D. Romero of Albuquerque; brother, David M. Romero of Albuquerque; sisters, Aneles R. Garcia, Julie M. Garcia, both of Albuquerque; grandparents, Wanda S. Morgan of Gallp, Merlyn James of Coyote Canyon, Judy Begay of Twin Lakes; great-grandmother, Nena James of Coyote Canyon; great-great-grandmother, Maxine Begay of Gallup.

Thomas was preceded in death by his grandfather, Toby James; great-great-grandfathers, Berlyn S. James, John N. Begay; great-grandfather, Larry Mike James; Michael Skippy James, Noland James, Leonard H. James.

Pallbearers will be Mitchell D. Romero, Leon James, Mervin James, Patrick Etcitty.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Coyote Canyon Chapter House, following services.
