Mary Begay

Services for Mary Ann Begay, 100, will be 10 a.m., Thursday, July 2, at Tse Bonito Chapel. The Rev. Rudy Barber will officiate. Burial will be in Lukachukai Cemetery. A rosary will be recited 3 p.m., today, July 1, at Tse Bonito Chapel.

Begay died June 29, 2009, in Chinle. She was born in1909, in Cove, into the Red Running into the Water People Clan for the Descheenie People Clan.

Begay was a medicine woman, rancher, farmer, herbalist and rug weaver. She loved to herd sheep.
Survivors include her sons, Bobby Begay, Willie Begay, Leon Ernest Begay; daughters, Lucy Yazzie, Mammie Murphym, Jessie True, Annie Barber, Nona Begay, Vivian Draper; brothers, Fred Descheenie, Harry Descheenie; sisters, Grace Wilson, Betty Nelson, Lula Tsosie, Margaret Redhouse, Carol Jean Big, Ida Scott; 39 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren.

Begay was preceded in death by her husband, Whitehair Begay; sons, Timmy Begay, Jimmy Begay, Benny Begay.

Pallbearers will be Vernon Murphy, Christopher True, Lawrence True, Darryl Begay, Leander Begay, Jerimiah Barber.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Mary Ann Begay’s residence, following services.

Jane Carnahan

GRANTS — Memorial services for Jane M. Carnahan, 86, will be 1 p.m., Thursday, July 2, at Compassion Mortuary. The Very Rev. Alberto Avella will be the celebrant. Burial will be in Grants Memorial Park.

Carnahan died June 26, 2009, in Grants. She was born March 9, 1923, in Tripoli, Wis.

Survivors include her husband, Joseph Carnahan Sr., of Grants; children, Joseph Carnahan Jr., of Lufkin, Texas, Roxie Cooper of Bluewater, Jo-an Voight of Jackson, Miss., Connie Ulibarri of Grants; 12 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren.

Carnahan was preceded in death by her son, Conrad Carnahan; parents, Conrade Johnson, Mary Johnson; sister, Mildred Brewer; brother, James Johnson.

Pierre Carrica

GRANTS — Funeral Mass for Pierre Jean Carrica, 80, will be 10 a.m., Thursday, July 2, at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church. The Rev. Alberto Avella, Rev. Lawrence O’Keefe and Rev. Rick Zerwas will be the celebrants. Burial will be in Grants Memorial Park. Visitation will be 12-5 p.m., today, July 1, at Compassion Mortuary. A rosary will be recited 7 p.m., tonight, July 1, at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church.

Carrica died June 28, 2009, in Grants. He was born Nov. 15, 1928, in Albuquerque.

Carrica was a life-long resident of the area who served our country through military service. He was a second-generation rancher and member of various stockman organizations. He was highly involved in St. Teresa of Avila parish through service as a lector, and religious instructor.

Carrica served the youth of the Catholic Diocese of Gallup through dedication to the Search for Christian Maturity Program which he helped find 40 years ago. His interest in youth and sports was shown through a lifetime of coaching and officiating. This effort will be recognized by his induction into the New Mexico Officials Association Hall of Fame on July 25, 2009.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Carrica of Grants; children, Denise Sanchez of San Rafael, Joseph Carrica of Minnesota, Patrick Carrica of Winnemucca, Nev., Barbara Campbell of Mundelein, Ill., Michael Carrica of Roswell, Paul Carrica of Grants; brothers, Jean L. Carrica of Omaha, Neb., Jean B. Carrica of Las Cruces; sisters, Sister Annette Carrica of Cincinnati, Ohio, Marie Therese Zerwas of Rio Rancho; 21 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Carrica was preceded in death by his parents, Patrick Carrica, Michael Carrica, Paul Carrica, Chris Sanchez, Bill Campbell.

John Francisco

CORINO CANYON — Funeral services are pending for John Lee Francisco, 67.

Francisco died June 28, 2009, in Flagstaff. He was born Jan. 21, 1942, in Fort Defiance.

A family gathering was 6 p.m., Tuesday, June 30, at Chil Chi tah Chapter House.

Cope Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Karl Katenay Sr.

IYANBITO — Funeral services for Karl W. Katenay Sr., 61, will be 10 a.m., Thursday, July 2, at Rollie Mortuary Palm Chapel. The Rev. Paul Beasley will officiate. Burial will be in Collins Family Cemetery.

Katenay died June 26, 2009, in Albuquerque. He was born Nov. 23, 1947, in Iyanbito, into the Towering House People Clan for the Red Running Into the Water People Clan.

Katenay was one of the top 10 in his graduating class of 1968 from Wingate High School. He attended two years at BYU and was in the process of obtaining a degree in the medical field.

He was well known for being a President for Iyanbito Chapter for 9 years. Katenay was President of the Senior Citizen Center and Land Board Committee. He was a DJ for KTNN and was employed with Kerr-McGee Mining.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita Sherman of Rock Springs; sons, Karl Katenay Jr. of Rock Springs; Dimitri Davis of Churchrock; brother, Earl W. Katenay of Iyanbito; sister, Pearl Katenay-Sloan of Iyanbito.

Katenay was preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth Brink Katenay, Tom Katenay.

Pallbearers will be Merle Sloan, Emmanuel Sloan, Alvin Largo, Emma Elizabeth Katenay, Lawson Benally Jr., Lee Taylor Benally.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Iyanbito Chapter House, following services.

Helen Tsinnie

TUBA CITY — Services for Helen Nesbah Tsinnie, 98, were 10 a.m., today, July 1, at the First Baptist Church in Tuba City. Interment was in family plot in the White Point Mesa, AZ.
Tsinnie died June 28, 2009, in Tuba City. She was born Feb. 10, 1911, in Sanostee, into the Salt People Clan.

Tsinnie attended Phoenix Indian School and Fort Wingate Indian School. She and her husband moved to Tuba City where they raised their family.

She worked at the Tuba City Indian Medical Center, where she retired after 21 years as Housekeeping Supervisor.

Survivors include her daughters, Angela M. Begay, Rena M. Gauna, both of Tuba City, Rosalind Horace of Phoenix; sons, Orville Z. Tsinnie of Shiprock, Richard K. Tsinnie of Chandler; 33 grandchildren; 75 great-grandchildren; 28 great-great-grandchildren.
Tsinnie was preceded in death by her husband, Richard H. Tsinnie, Sr.; parents, Hosteen and Nellie Yazzie; daughters, Betty L. Tsinnie, Darlene A. Coffland; son, Willis Ross Tsinnie; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter.
