Diné trust group: Navajo government can’t manage their own money

WINDOW ROCK — Navajo Nation Vice President Ben Shelly and Council Delegate Kenneth Maryboy testified Wednesday before a federal committee on a bill that would place administration of the Utah Navajo Trust Fund in the hands of a nonprofit organization created to be a trustee for Utah Navajos residing in San Juan County, Utah.

Speaking before the Senate Indian Affairs Committee in Washington, Shelly said the Navajo Nation rightfully should be the trustee and that the Nation is “adamantly opposed” to a bill introduced by Utah Sen. Robert Bennett that would give control of the trust fund to the Utah Dineh Corp.
