GALLUP — Sometimes, on Saturdays, people just can’t wait to get the news.

Which is why, for the past several weeks, the Independent has been coming out early, making it to the newsstands in Gallup as early as 6 a.m. and onto all parts of the Navajo Reservation by noon.

Loyal readers of the newspaper evidently took notice, since circulation for these weeks has jumped by almost 2,000 copies, according to the newspaper’s publisher, Robert Zollinger.

This increase, as well as positive feedback from readers, has led officials at the newspaper to decide that this will become permanent.

The newspaper is put together by the editors the Friday before with the sports department having the last deadlines so that the late scores on Friday evening and local Friday night sports scores can be put in Saturday’s paper.

So a new tradition at the Independent has been started — reading the weekend paper at the breakfast table.
