Clarissa Coan
WIDE RUINS — Funeral services for Clarissa Ann Coan, 45, will be 10 a.m., Friday, May 13, at Window Rock Church of God. The Rev. Ron Harvey will officiate. Burial will be in Fort Defiance Community Cemetery. Visitation will be at the service.
Coan died May 9, 2011, in Albuquerque. She was born Nov. 4, 1965, in Fort Defiance, into the Towering House People Clan for the Tangle People Clan.
Survivors include her husband, Ronald Coan Sr. of Rock Springs; sons, Myron Coan, Steven Coan, both of Laughlin, Nev., Derrick Begay, Brandon Coan, Ronald Coan Jr., all of Fort Defiance; daughters, Jennifer Begay, Sheila Begay, Jessica John, all of Fort Defiance; parents, David and Marie Mann of Wide Ruins; brothers, Jason Begay, Milton Begay, both of Wide Ruins, Slyvester Jim of Pinedale; sisters, Maria Begay of Aztec, Charlene Mann, Eunice Miller, both of Fort Defiance; Theresa Irving of Gallup, Veronica Burbank of Pinedale, Lula Irving of Breadsprings, Corrina Jim of Gallup; grandparents, Big and Elizabeth Shorty of Wide Ruins; seven grandchildren.
Coan was preceded in death by her great-grandmother, Sadie Jones; grandparents, Willie and Juanita Joe.
Pallbearers will be Jason Begay, Milton Begay, Derrick Begay, Able Coan, Kalvin Chapo, Merwin Joe.
The family will receive relatives and friends at Fort Defiance Chapter House, following services.

Dorothy Cook
GRANTS — Funeral services for Dorothy Helen Cook, 83, will be 10 a.m., Saturday, May 14, at United Pentecostal Church, Grants. Burial will be in Grants Memorial Park. Visitation will be 3-6 p.m., Friday, May 13, at Compassion Mortuary.
Cook died April 29, 2011, in Tucson. She was born Sept. 17, 1927, in Slagle, West Virginia.
Cook was retired from Levines Department Store.
Survivors include her children, Brenda Conkin of Grants, Raymond Lee Cook of Tucson; three grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; brother, Norman Lee Burgess of Florida.
Cook was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Cook; parents, Silas H. Burgess, Maude Mae Burgess; brothers, Walter Burgess, Dennis Burgess, Silas Burgess Jr.; sisters, Mary Webb, Opal Shetler; one grandson.
Pallbearers will be Troy McDaugale Jr., Barnard Davis, Randy Williams, Bert Morales, Don Russell, Don Button.

CHURCHROCK — Funeral services are pending for Robert Felson Sr., 59.
Felson died May 9, 2011, in Gallup. He was born Feb. 10, 1952, in Rehoboth.
A family gathering will be 6 p.m., tonight, May 11, at Churchrock Chapter. Friends and family are encouraged to attend.

Frank Gantar Sr.
GAMERCO — Rosary and funeral Mass for Frank Anton Gantar Sr., 85, will be 2 p.m., Friday, May 13, at St. Francis Catholic Church. The Rev. Patrick will be the celebrant. Burial will be in Gallup City Cemetery. Visitation will be 1:30-2 p.m., Friday, May 13, at St. Francis Catholic Church.
Gantar died May 6, 2011, in Gallup. He was born Feb. 26, 1926, in Gallup.
Gantar was a veteran of the US Army. He retired from Fort Wingate Army Depot. He loved to fish, hunt and raise animals.
Survivors include his children, Frank A. Gantar Jr. of Gamerco, Rebecca Gantar of Gallup; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.
Gantar was preceded in death by his wife, Savina Gantar; parents, Anton and Helen Gantar; son, Richard Gantar; daughter, Roseanne Garcia; brothers, Anton Gantar Jr., Sonny Gantar, George Gantar; sisters, Rosie Baca, Isabel Martinez, Olga May, Tila Griego.
Pallbearers will be Robert Garcia, Frank Gantar III, Ryan Garcia, Chad Gantar, Ricky Gantar, Jessie Ray Padilla.

Alfredo Martinez
GALLUP — Memorial services for Alfredo (Freddie) V. Martinez, 63, will be 10 a.m., May 12, at The Lighthouse, Gallup. Gregory Johnson will officiate. Private disposition will be at a later date.
Martinez died May 6, 2011, in Gallup. He was born Dec. 2, 1947, in Monahans, Texas.
Martinez retired with Qwest Communications in 2005. He loved helping out at his church. He enjoyed golfing, old timers baseball, walking, hanging out at the coffee shop with Fabian Garcia and his friends, riding his motor cycle and most of all he loved spending time with his grandchildren and family.
Survivors include his wife, Monica Martinez of Gallup; daughters, Regina Bigay of San Francisco, Calif., Valerie Chavez of Phoenix, Tammi Archuleta of Gallup, Nicole Martinez of Gallup; parents, Oscar Martinez of Gallup, Alicia Carrillo of Odessa, Texas; brothers, Danny Gonzales of Fort Collins, Colo., Carlos Carrio of Atlanta, Ga., Favian Carrillo of Kermit, Texas; sisters, Bertha Navarretta of Odessa, Texas, Josie Ledezma of Globe, Yolanda Galaviz of Gallup, Isabel Najera of Gallup; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
Martinez was preceded in death by his son, Freddie Espinosa.
The family will receive relatives and friends at Community Action Center, Gallup, following services.

Carrie Sumner
GRANTS — Memorial services for Carrie Jean Sumner, 84, will be 1 p.m., Friday, May 13, at Compassion Mortuary.
Sumner died May 9, 2011, in Grants. She was born Aug. 25, 1926, in Thurmond, W.V.
Sumner was retired from Levine’ Department Store as manager.
Survivors include her children, James Sumner of Odessa, Texas, John Wesley Sumner of Aurora, Colo., William Preston Sumner of Carlsbad, Mary Sumner of Grants, Sandra O’Neal of Grants, Carol Ballew of Grants; brothers, Emory Wayne McGuffin of Oak Hill, W.V., Richie McGuffin of Maryland; sister, Betty Cambell of Phoenix; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren.
Sumner was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Sumner; parents, Claymus McGuffin, Ethel McGuffin; son, Larry Wayne Sumner.

Kenneth Watchman Sr.
CHINLE — Funeral services for Kenneth Watchman Sr., 80, will be 10 a.m., Thursday, May 12, at Catholic Church, Chinle. Burial will be in Veterans Cemetery, Chinle.
Watchman died May 8, 2011, in Phoenix. He was born Feb. 10, 1931, in Chinle, into the Red Meets the Water People Clan for the Coyote Pass People Clan.
Watchman was a lifetime resident of Chinle. He was a veteran and a retired tour guide for the Canyon De Chelly National Monument. His hobbies included visiting friends, meeting new people, spending time with family and taking tourist into the Canyon.
Survivors include his sons, Franklin Tsosie, Kenneth Watchman Jr., Kelvin Watchman, all of Chinle, Arnold Watchman of Phoenix; daughters Rita Totsoni, Juanita, Rena, Roselinda, Carmelita Watchman, all of Chinle; brothers, Tulley Watchman of Sawmill, Joe Sr., Denny Sr., John Watchman, all of Chinle, Yazzie Lewis of Salina, Okla.; sister, June Ann Totsoni; 24 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren.
Watchman was preceded in death by his wife, Rosemary Watchman; parents, Robert Lewis, Dorothy Watchman.
Pallbearers will be Fabian Watchman, Leander Watchman, Kevin Watchman, Nathaniel Tsosie, Franklin Tsosie, Beleventino Yazzie.
The family will receive relatives and friends at 1 mile south of Tseyi Overlook, Chinle at Rita Totsoni residence. The family will meet 6 p.m., nightly at Chinle Chapter House.
