GALLUP — The Gallup Police Department is investigating the assault of a local homeless woman who was found running injured and without clothing along Wilson Street.

Police officers were dispatched to the 400 Block of Wilson Street on Aug. 24 at about 1 p.m. in reference to the assault. A passer-by was assisting the injured woman and had covered her with a blanket when police officers arrived at the scene, according to a police report.

The woman was taken to the Gallup Indian Medical Center for treatment of a head wound, but could remember little of what happened to her.

“I did meet with the victim who told me that she was drinking alcoholic beverages at the park on Wilson with a friend. She said that she did not know who beat her up, or why her clothes were taken off,” responding Officer Rosanne Morrissette wrote in the report.

No arrests have been made in connection with the assault, but anyone with information about the attack is asked to call the police department at (505) 863-9365.

Counterfeit increase
Local businesses have also reported an increase in counterfeit money being circulated throughout the area.

Employees for Wal-Mart, 1650 W. Maloney Ave., reported to police that they received a fake $100 bill early this morning.

Sgt. Erin Toadlena-Pablo, a spokeswoman for the Gallup Police Department, said several business have reported receiving counterfeit bills within the last week and the problem is escalating.

“We really want businesses to know what’s going on, so they can protect themselves,” she said.

Toadlena-Pablo said employees should look closely at indicators on bills to determine whether they are valid or fake.

Anyone who is arrested in connection with the fake bills, will face federal offenses, she also warned .

Anyone with information about the counterfeit bills, is asked to call CrimeStoppers at (505) 722-6161.
