District 4-H horse show to be in Cibola

By Jim Tiffin
Cibola County Bureau

PREWITT — The 4-H district horse show, which rotates through one of each of seven central, western and northwestern counties in New Mexico every year, will be in Cibola County this year.

Jimmy Plane, Cibola County cooperative extension agent, said between 10-15 4-H members are expected to enter the event which will be held June 23 at the Prewitt Rodeo Grounds.

The event will start at 9 a.m., with registration beginning at 8 a.m., and will probably last until dark, he said.

Entry fees have not yet been determined, but will be dependent on the cost of the awards, he said. That information will be available through local Cooperative Extension agents soon, he said.

There are three age group level of entries for 4-H members and 11 categories in each age group.

Plane said the age groups for entries follow the 4-H standards: Novice, 9-11; Junior, 12-13; and Senior, 14-19.

The categories each horse owner may enter are: Equestrian Over Fences, Working Hunter, Hunter Under Saddle, Hunt Seat Equestrian, Showmanship at Halter, Western Pleasure, Western Horsemanship, Trail, Reining, Barrel Race and Pole Bending.

The most popular events are usually Showmanship at Halter, Western Pleasure, Barrel Racing and Pole Bending.

Plane said anyone who is interested in showing a horse and competing and is not a 4-H member may contact one of the Cooperative Extension Agents in the counties involved.

"If a 4-H member is not in the Horse Project, they can sign up, just contact their leader," Plane said.

Memberships are required and the entry deadline is June 15, he said.

"This horse show is not affiliated with the horse show that is connected to the Bi-County Fair," Plane said.

"I am not sure whether the fair horse show will return this year or not," he said. The fair horse show last year was canceled.
