Curtis Begay

MANUELITO CANYON, NM — Funeral services for Curtis Julian Begay, 29, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 15, at Rollie Mortuary. Brother Samuel Walker will officiate. Burial will follow at the Gallup City Cemetery.

Visitation will be at Rollie Mortuary.

Begay died May 8 in Socorro, N.M. He was born December 1, 1977 in Gallup into the Black Streak of Forest Clan for the Red Running into the Water Clan.

Begay attended Chuska Boarding School, Chi Chil Tah Elementary School, Fort Wingate High School, and Gallup High School. He worked for the Apache Casino as a security guard and with Sonic at the time of his death.

Survivors include his daughter, Jelina Mendez of Mescalero, NM; parents, Frankie Begay of Jones Ranch and Emma Nelson of Manuelito Canyon; brothers, Nathaniel Roberts of Pinedale and Leon Begay of Manuelito Canyon; sisters, Marilyn Smith of Mescalero, Datta Bowman of Gallup, and Dinah Begay of Tsyatoh.

Begay was preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Susie Nelson, Julian and Sophia Begay.

Pallbearers will be Charles Smith, Nicholas Smith, Don Bowman, Leon Begay, Gabriel Roberts, and Raymond Benally.

Rollie Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.


Alvin Johnson, Sr.

INDIAN WELLS, Ariz. — Graveside services for Alvin Yazzie Johnson, Sr., 57, will be at 11 a.m. today, May 14, at the Veterans Cemetery in Holbrook.

Johnson died May 10 in Flagstaff. He was born December 5, 1949 in Parker, Ariz. into the Bitter Water Clan for the Red Streak in the Water Clan.

Johnson, Sr. graduated from Intermountain in Utah and earned an AA degree from NAU. He played basketball, baseball, and was an artist in native arts.

Survivors include his sons Alvin Johnson, Jr. from Albuquerque and Grant Jared Johnson; daughters, Alexandra Rodriguez of Gallup, Kimberlyann Johnson of Albuquerque, Alvita Johnson of Dilcon, Ariz, and Kristy Johnson of Flagstaff; brothers, Larry W. Johnson of Phoenix and David A. Johnson of Phoenix; sisters Louise Taylor, Joann Manuelito, Kathy Scott, Lorraine Sandoval; and 12 grandchildren.

Johnson was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, and three brothers.


Josie B. Chavez

GRANTS — Services for Josie B. Chavez, 51, will be announced at a later date.

Chavez died May 12 in Albuquerque. She was born October 25, 1955.

Compassion Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.


Edgar Bitsoie, Sr.

TOHATCHI — Services for Edgar Bitsoie, Sr., 89, will be announced at a later date.

Bitsoie, Sr. died May 12 in Gallup. He was born January 22, 1918 in Crystal, NM. into the Salt Clan for the Sleeping Rock Clan.

Rollie Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.


Amos Patrick Shorty

CROWNPOINT — Services for Amos Patrick Shorty, 39, will be announced at a later date.

Shorty died May 11 in Crownpoint. He was born March 17, 1968 in Crownpoint into the Towering House Clan for the Bitter Water Clan.

Rollie Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.


Clara McKinley

GRANTS — Clara McKinley, 96 will be announced at a later date.

McKinley died May 14 in Grants. She was born November 16, 1911 in Forrest, N.M.

Compassion Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
