Mary Gallagher

GALLUP — Burial Mass will for Mary Elizabeth Gallagher will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14 at the Sacred Heart Cathedral. The Very Rev. Lawrence J. O’Keefe will officiate.

Gallagher died Nov. 11, 2007. She was born Dec. 5, 1917 in Raton.

She was known by the name “Mary ‘Lyd”. She graduated from St. Patrick’s Academy in Raton in 1936 and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Loretto Heights College in Denver in 1940. She was an educator who taught in various communities in New Mexico and other western states before settling in Gallup, where she pursued a long career teaching and serving as the librarian at Gallup Jr. High School. In 1957 she was elected President of the National Education Association of New Mexico. Gallagher was also a photographer and seamstress and was adept at heirloom quilting, needlepoint and embroidery.

Survivors include her niece, Cathy Gasparich; nephew, John P. Gasparich and his wife Janis of Santa Fe.

Gallagher was preceded in death by parents, Patrick and Mary Ann Gallagher; sisters, Francis Patricia Gallagher, Catherine Gallagher Gasparich; brother-in-law, John F. Gasparich.
Pallbearers will be friends and relatives.

Rollie Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
