John Sells

SHIPROCK — Funeral Mass for John C. Sells, 92, will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 29 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 414 N. Allen, Farmington. Father Tim Farrell will officiate. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. today, Nov. 28 at Desert View Funeral Home, Highway 491 North, Shiprock.

Sells died Friday, Nov. 23, 2007 in Shiprock. He was born Feb. 22, 1915 in Oak Springs, Ariz. into the Bitter Water People Clan for the Red Running into the Water People Clan.

Sells served in the U.S. Marine Corp as a Navajo Code Talker during World War II in the Pacific Conflict in Japan. He was awarded the Silver Medal of Honor in 2000. Sells worked as an x-ray technician in his early years, then at El Navajo Garage as an auto mechanic. He retired after 20 years as a heavy equipment mechanic at Navajo Mines in Fruitland in 1985. He also was a Navajo businessman, owning and operating the Plateau Gas Station in Shiprock. John played sports and coached men’s and women’s baseball and baketball teams and was a referee for high school basketball. He also was a bowler traveling with many bowling tournaments in the country. He loved to golf, hunt, and travel with his family. He enjoyed the poker/blackjack table and the pool table.

Survivors include sons, Joseph H. Sells of Santa Fe, Christopher F. Sells of Montana, Alton D. Sells of Upper Fruitland; daughters, Erma J. Archuleta of Santa Fe, Trudy Erickson of Cortez, Cheryl Davis Sells of Upper Fruitland; 18 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren.

Sells was preceded in death by parents, Capitan and Yanabah Benally; wife, Angela T. Sells; brothers, Cato M. Sells, John Cato Sells, Luther Sells, Capitan Joe Benally, Capitan Benally, John Kee, Walter Sells; sisters, Ida Benally, Lillian Nelson, Katherine Benally; two granddaughters.

Pallbearers will be Jimmy Sells, Joey Sells, Raymond Sells, Robert Allen, Eric Archuleta, Patrick Tsosie, Jerry Harvey, Larry Manus.

Desert View Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Connie Candelaria

SAN RAFAEL — Funeral Mass for Connie Candelaria, 64, will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 29 at San Rafael Catholic Church. Father Jeff King will officiate. Burial will follow at the La Morada Cemetery in San Rafael. A rosary and wake will be 7 p.m. today, Nov. 28 at La Morada.

Candelaria died Nov. 25, 2007 in Grants. She was born Aug. 11, 1943 in Picher, Okla.

Survivors include husband Manuel Candelaria Sr. of San Rafael; sons, Manuel Candelaria Jr. of Albuquerque, Carlos Candelaria of Albuquerque, Michael Candelaria of San Rafael; daughters, Denise Candelaria of San Rafael, Debby Formen of Okla., Cindy Candelaria of Milan, Teresa Candelaria of Grants, Marcella Candelaria of San Rafael, Christy Candelaria of San Rafael, Samantha Candelaria of San Rafael; 16 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.

Candelaria was preceded in death by parents, Thomas and Lela Hemmick; son, Ruben Candelaria; brother, Howard Hemmick.

Pallbearers will be Johnny Valdez, Leo Casaus, Jesus Martinez, Garry Formen, Manuel Candelaria III, Damian Martinez, George Valdes, Randy Martinez.


Eddi Jo Jaramillo

GALLUP — Funeral Mass for Eddi Jo Jaramillo, 32, will be 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 30 at Sacred Heart Cathedral. Very Rev. Lawrence J. O’Keefe will officiate. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. A rosary will be recited 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29 at Sacred Heart Cathedral.

Jaramillo died Nov. 25, 2007 in Gallup. She was born Feb. 20, 1975 in Gallup.

Jaramillo graduated from Gallup High School in 1993, University of New Mexico-Gallup with a Masters Degree in Elementary Education. She was employed for Gallup McKinley Schools at Lincoln Elementary.

Survivors include mother, Josie Jaramillo; brothers, Eddie Jaramillo, Ernest Jaramillo; sisters, Emily Marquez, Eileen Murphy.

Jaramillo was preceded in death by her newborn son, Rudy James Neal; father, Eduard Jaramillo; grandparents, Manuel and Emilia Gonzales, Jake and Lupe Jaramillo.

Pallbearers will be Eddie Jaramillo, Ernest Jaramillo, Christopher DeArmond, Levi Saucedo, Isiah Baca, Manuel Estrada.

The family will receive relatives and friends at KC Hall, Gallup.

Rudy Neal

GALLUP — Funeral Mass for Rudy James Neal, infant, will be Friday, Nov. 30 at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Gallup. A rosary will be recited at Sacred Heart Cathedral.

Neal died Nov. 25, 2007 in Gallup. He was born Nov. 25, 2007 in Gallup.

Survivors include father, Martin Neal Jr.; grandparents, Martin Neal Sr., Claudia Hess, Josie Jaramillo.

Neal was preceded in death by mother, Eddi Jo Jaramillo.

Honorary pallbearers will be Marcus Tiberius Neal, Charles R. Neal Sr., Charles R. Neal Jr., Tomas Felix Neal, Richard D. Neal, Timothy J. Neal, Julian Macias, Gregory Macias, Rick Heisch, Dominic Ferrari, Anthony Ferrari, Michael Ferrari.

Alton Yazzie

THOREAU — Funeral services for Alton Roy Yazzie, 34, will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 29 at the 1st Baptist Church, Thoreau. Pastor Glenn Marshall will officiate. Burial will be in Thoreau Community Cemetery, Thoreau.

Yazzie was born March 11, 1973 into the Two Who Came for Water People Clan for the Sagebrush People Clan.

Yazzie graduated from Thoreau High in 1992. He liked to watch football. His favorite football team was the Kansas City Chiefs. Yazzie liked to work outdoors, take nature walks and watch movies. He enjoyed lending a helping hand.

Survivors include son, Alton Roy Yazzie Jr.; parents, Marie Saunders and Robin Lee Wood, both of Thoreau; brothers, Rydell Lee Wood of Thoreau; grandparents, Helen B. Saunders, Etta Begay Loley.

Yazzie was preceded in death by father, Jerry Roy Yazzie Jr.; brother, Gary Roy Yazzie; sister, Alvina Lee Wood; grandfathers, Buddly Enrico Saunders, Jerry Roy Yazzie Sr.

Pallbearers will be Cornell Curley, Wildurd Jake, Larry Martinez, Delbert Saunders, Marklyne Tsosie, Robin Wood.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Thoreau Chapter House after services.

Robert Dedman Jr.

CHINLE — Funeral Services for Robert Dedman Jr., 41, will be 10 a.m. Nov. 29 at the Lady of Fatima Church. Father Blaine Grien will officiate. Burial will be in Beautiful valley Family Plot. Viewing will be 9 a.m., one hour prior to service.

Dedman Jr. was born Sept. 4, 1966 in Fort Defiance into the Towering House People Clan for the Mexican People Clan.

He graduated in 1984 from Chinle High School. Hobbies included arts and crafts work, softball, carpenter work and painter.

Survivors include daughter, Rachelle Tsosy; father, Rober Dedman Sr.; brothers, Carlson Ayze, Delbert Ayze, Oscar Dedman, Roy Dedman; sisters, Lorene Dedman, Roberta Brown, Rebecca Dedman.

Dedman Jr. was preceded in death by mother, Alice K. Dedman, grandparents, Earl and Pauline Ayze; brother, Leroy Dedman; uncle William K. Yazzie; grandparents, Hoskie and Agres Dedman.

Pallbearers will be Nathaniel Bia, Lennie Begay, Carlson Ayze, Travis Pahe, Aaron Pahe, Anthony Pahe.

David Tom

MENTMORE — Funeral services for David Tom, 73, will be 10 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 29 at the Rollie Mortuary Palm Chapel, Gallup. Burial will be in Gallup City Cemetery.

Tom died Nov. 26, 2007 in Flagstaff. He was born Jan. 4, 1934 in Mentmore into the Salt People Clan for the Red Running into the Water People Clan.

Tom worked for Coca Cola, Gurley Motors (Central Motors), United Nuclear Mine, and the Railroad. His hobbies included fishing, watching sports, traveling, auto repair, carpentry.

Survivors include sons, Marvin Tom, Ronald Tom; daughters, Caroline Tom, Linda Williams; brother, Eddie George Tom; sisters, Faye Lee, Lillie Tom; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Tom was preceded in death by wife, Lena Ross Tom; brother, Spencer Tom Sr.; sister, Dolly Davis.

Pallbearers will be family members.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Tse’yatoh Chapter House following burial.

Dora West

ALBUQUERQUE — Mass for Dora B. West, 90, was 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17 at the Shrine of St. Bernadette. Interment followed at Sunset Memorial Park. A rosary was recited 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16 at the French Mortuary, Lomas Chapel.

West died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2007. She was born in Pena Blanca, N.M.

She met her husband, Bennie, in Pena Blanca. They were married for 54 years until his death. West spent most of her life raising children, where she became an excellent homemaker. She lived in Gallup for many years.

Survivors included son, James West; daughters, Hilia Jackson, Charlene Murphy, Phyllis Gelabert, all of Albuquerque; brothers, David Baca; sister, Mary Baca;12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren.

West was preceded in death by husband, Bennie West; son, Charlie West.
Pallbearers were Mark West, Jock West, Jude

Sais, Jason Sais, Mitch West.


Edison Denetsone

WHISKEY CREEK, N.M. — Services are pending for Edison Denetsone, 85.

Denetsone died Nov. 25, 2007 in Whiskey Creek, N.M.. He was born July 3, 1922.

Cope Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
