Police seek truck in hit, run fatality

By Leslie Wood

GALLUP — Investigators are searching for a pickup or sports utility vehicle that was involved in a fatal hit-and-run collision late Monday.

Gallup resident Colleen Silvers, 55, was killed at 11:30 p.m. when she was struck by a vehicle traveling along New Mexico Highway 602 near Park Avenue.

The involved vehicle then drove away.

Deputy Police Chief John Allen, a spokesman for the Gallup Police Department, said debris and witnesses at the scene have led investigators to search for a sports utility or pickup that was involved in the collision. The vehicle is a 1990 to 1998 GMC or Chevrolet model that sustained front and passenger side damage as a result of the impact.

No further description was provided.

Allen said Silvers was walking along the roadway when she was struck and killed. Alcohol most likely contributed to the fatality.

“We discourage folks from walking on the roadway, especially in dark areas,” he said.

The driver of the involved vehicle could face a felony charge of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in injury or death, once he or she is located.

Anyone with information about the collision is asked to call CrimeStoppers at (505) 722-6161. A reward of up to $1,000 is available to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of a suspect in the case.
