Adrian Arviso

MESA — Funeral Mass for Adrian J. Arviso, 32, will be 10 a.m., Friday, Aug. 29, at the Mary Mother of Mankind, St. Michaels. Burial will be in Todilto Park, Navajo.

Arviso died Aug. 25, 2008, in Mesa. He was born March 8, 1976, in Fort Defiance, into the Red Running Into the Water People Clan for the Near to Water People Clan.

Arviso attended Chinle High School and graduated in 1994, High Tech Institute, Phoenix, 1997-Associate of Occupational Studies (Degree in computer/Electronics Technology). He worked as a security guard, firefighter, computer technician at WRUSD, IT specialist at Indian Health Services in Fort Defiance, network specialist at SRPMIC, IT specialist (system administrator) at PIMC.

Survivors include his wife, Tennille Arviso; daughters, Shelby Lynn Arviso, Amber Liyah Arviso; mother, Darlene J. Yazzie; sisters, Cheryl Lynn Arviso, Michelle Roan, Kirby Roan; grandparents, Leroy Yazzie Sr., Della B. Yazzie, Paul W. Arviso Sr.

Arviso was preceded in death by his grandmother, Doris J. Arviso; father, Floyd J. Arviso.

Pallbearers will be family members and friends.

The family will meet at Yvonne Arviso Gorman residence, Todilto Park, Navajo.

Pherstephanie Begay

BREADSPRINGS — Funeral services for Pherstephanie Begay, 40, will be 2 p.m., Friday, Aug. 29, at Cope Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Terry Goodin will officiate. Burial will be in Gallup City Cemetery.

Begay died Aug. 26, 2008, in Gallup. She was born April 11, 1968, in Zuni, into the Salt People Clan for the Sage Brush Hill People Clan.

Begay attended Breadsprings Day School and Wingate High School. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Wilmer Shirley Sr. of Twin Lakes; sons, Christopher Jake, Leander Shirley, Wilmer Shirley Jr., Brandon Shirley, Kory Shirley, all of Breadsprings; daughter, Tracey Begay of Breadsprings; mother, Louise Becenti; brother, Willard Becenti; sisters, Vera Becenti-Towne, Winifred Tom; grandparents, Tom C. and Mary C. Begay.

Begay was preceded in death by her son, Colby Shirley.

Pallbearers will be family members.

James Bennett

FORT DEFIANCE — Funeral services for James Allen Bennett “Gent”, 62, will be 10 a.m., Friday, Aug. 29, at the Good Shepherd Mission, Fort Defiance. The Rev. Richard Stevens will officiate. Burial will be in family plot, Sawmill.

Bennett died Aug. 22, 2008, in Fort Defiance. He was born Feb. 19, 1946, in Fort Defiance, into the Mud People Clan for the Tangle People Clan.

Bennett graduated from Window Rock High School in 1963. He entered the US Army in 1966-1969, during the Vietnam Era. He worked for Navajo Pine, Navajo Nation Division of Youth and Social Services. Bennett enjoyed bull riding, fly fishing, and hunting. He was an avid reader, a story teller, and he had a gentle nature which earned him the name Gent.

Survivors include his sons, Shane Bennett of Glendale, Dustin Bennett of Maricopa; brothers, Rakph P. Bennett Jr. of Crystal, Benjamin Bennett of Fort Defiance; sister, Lorene Fergueson of Albuquerque; two grandchildren.

Bennett was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph P. Bennett Sr., Mabel Bennett; wife, Gloria Bennett; brother, Nelson Bennett; sister, Bernice Begay; son, Duane Bennett.

Pallbearers will be family members.

Sheila Chapman

GRANTS — Funeral service for Sheila R. Chapman, 50, will be 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 29, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Grants. Burial will be in private family land between Milan and Bluewater.

Chapman died Aug. 26, 2008, in Grants. She was born Aug. 25, 1958, in Laeger, W.V.

Chapman was employed with Allsups, The Cibola County Beacon, The Gallup Independent and a Home Health Care Giver.

Survivors include her husband, David Chapman of Grants; children, Gregory Chapman of Grants, Natasha Chavez of Grants, Chelsea Chapman of Grants; mother, Betty Blankenship of Taylorsville, N.C.; father, Frank Damron of Grants; brother, Frank Damron Jr.; one grandchild.

Chapman was preceded in death by her sister, Patricia Griffith.

Pallbearers will be Gregory Chapman, Joaquin Chavez, Jim Strickland, Sal Marez, Mickey Damron, Lee Mayne.

Gerald Goldtooth

TSEDATAH — Funeral services for Gerald James Goldtooth, 33, will be 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 29. Bishop Jerry Dubois will officiate. Burial will be in Gallup City Cemetery.

Goldtooth died Aug. 24, 2008, in Phoenix. He was born Feb. 4, 1975, in Gallup, into the Blacksheep People Clan for the Bitter Water People Clan.

Goldtooth went to Gallup High, worked various jobs as a cook. His hobbies included watching wrestling, reading, and being with his nieces and nephews.

Survivors include his brothers, Ronnie Upshaw, Benny Upshaw of Phoenix; sisters, Connie Upshaw Brown of Tsedath, Cinday Bradley, Treva Upshaw of Phoenix;

Goldtooth was preceded in death by his parents, James Goldtooth, Dorothy Francis; grandparents, Charlie and Elizabeth Francis, Paul and Bah Godtooth.

Pallbearers will be Duran Upshaw, Jason Brown, Joseph Upshaw, Dominic Upshaw, Charles Bradley, Cody Bradley.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Church of God in Manuelito, following services.

NASCHITTI — Services are pending for Rose Mary Louie, 69.

Louie died Aug. 27, 2008, in Naschitti. She was born Sept. 5, 1938, in Naschitti.

A gathering will be 6 p.m., tonight, Aug. 28, at the Naschitti Chapter.

Annie Nez

HOUCK — Funeral services for Annie B. Nez, 57, will be 10 a.m. (mst), Friday, Aug. 29, at the Good News Mission, Houck. The Rev. Milt Shirleson will officiate. Burial will be in community cemetery, Houck.

Nez died Aug. 22, 2008, in Gallup. She was born May 30, 1951, in Houck, into the Towering House People Clan for the One Who Walks Around People Clan.

Nez attended McNary High School in McNary, Ariz. She was a homemaker and loved to spend time with her grandchildren on a daily basis.

Survivors include her sons, Lester Nez, Vernon Nez, both of Houck; daughters, Deann Tully, Arlinda Barney, Arlana Nez, all of Houck; mother, Mary Todokozie of Houck; brother, Johnnie Todokozie of Houck; sisters, Josephine Begay of Houck, Edith Smith of Whiteriver; 20 grandchildren.

Nez was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Nez.

Pallbearers will be Vernon Nez, Larry Russell, Johnnie Todokozie, Zachary Barney, Timothy Smith, Daniel Smith.

Nelson Peterson

GALLUP — Services for Nelson Peterson, 63, will be 10 a.m., Friday, Aug. 29, at Rollie Mortuary Chapel, Gallup. Burial will be in Gallup City Cemetery.

Peterson died Aug. 25, 2008, in Gallup. He was born July 1, 1943, in Rock Springs, N.M., into the Mountain Cove People Clan for the Red Running into the Water People Clan.

Peterson was a railroad labor worker. He enjoyed spending time with his family and liked to travel.
Survivors include his brother, Peter Peterson of Rock Springs; sister, Minnie Sherman of Rock Springs.

Peterson was preceded in death by his father, Fred Peterson; mother, Mary Peterson; sisters, Alice P. Yazzie, Anna Saunders; brothers, John Peterson, Leo Peterson, Tom Peterson, Juan Peterson; wife, France Saunders.

Pallbearers will be Colbert Sherman, Daniel Saunders, Justin Peterson, Harry John, Jimmy Bitloy, Hanson Peterson Jr.
