Phil Ashley

ALBUQUERQUE — Memorial Mass for Phil Ashley, 43, will be 10 a.m., Friday, Nov. 7, at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Gallup. The Rev. Lawrence O’Keefe will officiate. A rosary will be recited 7 p.m., tonight, Nov. 6, at Sacred Heart Cathedral. The Rev. Lipinski will officiate.

Ashley died Nov. 4, 2008, in Albuquerque. He was born May 10, 1965, in Zuni, into the Black Streak Wood People Clan for the Black Sheep People Clan.

Survivors include his partner, Joe Martinez of Albuquerque; brothers, Alex Ashley of Gallup, Louis Ashley of Albuquerque, Anthony Ashley of Gallup; sisters, Priscilla Shirley of Colorado Springs, Colo., Loretta Ashley of Gallup.
Ashley was preceded in death by his parents, Leo G. Ashley and Helen Silversmith Ashley.

Sadie Brown

BREAD SPRINGS — Funeral services are pending for Sadie Smith Brown, 59.

Brown died Nov. 5, 2008, in Gallup. She was born July 6, 1949, in Bread Springs.

A family gathering will be 6 p.m., tonight, Nov. 6, at the Bread Springs Chapter. Friends and relatives are encouraged to attend.

Aaron Manygoats

FLAGSTAFF — Funeral services are pending for Aaron S. Manygoats, 32.

Manygoats died Nov. 4, 2008, in Flagstaff. He was born May 29, 1976, in Zuni.

A family gathering will be 6 p.m., tonight, Nov. 6, at the Chapter House.

Mary Johnson

STANDING ROCK, N.M. — Services for Mary J. Johnson, 85, will be 10 a.m., Friday, Nov. 7, at Bible Baptist Shepherd Church, Standing Rock. The Rev. Neil Foerster will officiate. Burial will be in Community Cemetery, Crownpoint.

Johnson died Nov. 3, 2008, in Crownpoint. She was born July 15, 1923, in Standing Rock, into the Towering House People Clan for the Red Running Into the Water People Clan.

Johnson was rug weaver and homemaker. Her hobbies included sewing and she enjoyed family gatherings, cook outs, and working outside. As a young woman, she herded sheep. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include her sons, Joe Johnson Sr., Edison Johnson, Elmer Johnson, all of Standing Rock; daughters, Mary Miller of Pinedale, Ella Mae Smith, Lilly Mae Yazzie, Jeanie Johnson, Marilyn Johnson of Crownpoint; sisters, Nancy Tso, Ella Harry, both of Standing Rock; 32 grandchildren.

Johnson was preceded in death by her parents, Billy and Lillian James; brothers, Thomas and Marty James; sister, Dolly Shorty; sons, Harry and David Johnson; one granddaughter.

Pallbearers will be family members.

Louise Notah-Tsosie

NASCHITTI — Funeral services for Louise Notah-Tsosie, 78, will be 10 a.m., Friday, Nov. 7, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Naschitti. Burial will be in Naschitti Cemetery.

Tsosie died Nov. 2, 2008, in Naschitti. She was born Jan. 8, 1930, in Naschitti, into the Ute People Clan for the Salt People Clan.

Tsosie was a homemaker and rug weaver. She loved animals, especially her sheep and dogs.

She enjoyed tending to her home and livestock, visiting friends and relatives and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her sons, Richard Notah of Tohatchi, David Randolph Sr. of Newcomb, Ernest Tsosie of Naschitti; daughters, Virginia Brown of Colorado Sprigs, Colo., Bernice Badane of Chinle; brother, Harrison Notah of Lawndale, Calif.; sister, Elouise Pine of La Plata, N.M.; 24 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren.

Tsosie was preceded in death by her husband, Howard James Tsosie; daughter, Loretta Tsosie-Moore; parents, Lorine Notah, Anson Begay.

Pallbearers will be Therman Tsosie, Thomas Tsosie, Tyrell Begay, Shelton Tso, Leander Randolph, David Randolph Jr.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Naschitti Chapter House, following services.

Fannie Smith

MARIANO LAKE — Services for Fannie C. Smith, 75, will be 11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 7, at Cope Memorial Chapel. T.H. Lee will officiate. Burial will be in Gallup City Cemetery.

Smith died Nov. 3, 2008, in Gallup. She was born May 20, 1933, in Mariano Lake, into the Salt People Clan for the Towering House People Clan.

Smith was an herbalist/medicine woman and a rug weaver.

Survivors include her son, Randy Brown of Mariano Lake; daugthers, Maggie Charley of Thoreau, Sandra Enrico of Marino Lake; brothers, Herbert J. Charley of Show Low, Ariz., Stanley H. Charley, Roger J. Charley, both of Mariano Lake; sisters, Linda Etcitty, Joanne M. Lee, both of Mariano Lake, Beverly Desiderio of Haystack; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.

Smith was preceded in death by her father, Jake Charley; mother, Lillian Charley; brothers, Clifford and Herbert M. Charley.

Pallbearers will be Alvin Largo Sr., Houston Largo, Tyrik Enrico, Jameson Bennett, William Bennett Sr., Ryan Wauneka.

Cope Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Betsy Taliwood

SHIPROCK — Funeral services for Betsy Taliwood, 66, will be 10 a.m., Friday, Nov. 7, at Desert View Funeral Home Chapel, Shiprock.

Interment will follow at Memory Gardens, 6917 E Main St., Farmington. Visitation will be 3-6 p.m., today, at Desert View Funeral Home Chapel, Shiprock.

Taliwood died Saturday, Nov. 1, 2008, in Farmington. She was born May 20, 1942, in Sanostee.
