Milan Trustees work out election details

By Helen Davis
Cibola County Bureau

MILAN — The Jan. 17 meeting of the Milan Board of Trustees finished in near record time as trustees approved an open meeting act-related resolution, approved an agreement and designated positions for polling places and pay for poll workers.

Milan will have one polling place for the March 4 municipal election. Election staff includes a presiding judge, compensated at $130; an election judge, making $120 for the day; and election clerk, paid $110 and an absentee ballot judge, making $45 dollars.

An alternate poll worker will receive $20 on stand-by. Anyone attending the election school with the county clerk will be paid $10. Trustees will review a list of people who signed up to work the polls and appoint election works.
The board canceled two agenda items: the speaker expected to make a presentation for the New Mexico Environment Department did not show up, and the item that would appoint a chief of police dropped off the agenda when trustees determined that an appointment made in last April’s meeting would be in effect for two years from that meeting. Chief Jerry Stephens continues to hold the office of village chief of police.

Trustees declared Francisco “Shorty” Ramirez Village Employee of the Year for 2007.

A public meeting to discuss “the church property” on the west side of the village is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, in the village hall. Mayor Tom Ortega encourages residents living near the property to attend the discussion meeting because the area will need many improvements including structures in the near future.

The next regular Milan Board of Trustees meeting is 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 21.

The village asks the public to be aware that offices will now close at 4:30 p.m.
