Former Navajo Nation Police officer charged, found driving drunk after shooting

THOREAU — A Thoreau woman died Tuesday afternoon from multiple gunshot wounds reportedly inflicted by her common law husband who is a former police officer for the Navajo Police Department.

The victim’s name has not been released pending notification of next of kin, but authorities said she was a 42-year-old mother and resident of the Thoreau Trailer Park space 63. The park is located just north of the Thoreau post office.

Deputy Ed Marble, of the McKinley County Sheriff’s Department, said he found the woman laying face down on her driveway moments after 8 a.m. She sustained multiple gun shot wounds to the front of her body, including her abdomen.

Neighbors heard the gunshots and notified police.

The victim was initially conscious and told authorities her common-law husband, Harrison Largo, shot her during a domestic dispute between the pair. She was then transported by air to an Albuquerque hospital where she died from her injuries at about 1:50 p.m., Marble said.

Sheriff’s deputies and Navajo police then arrested Largo as he drove on a road north of Milan about 10 a.m. He was taken into custody without incident and will face an open count of murder and tampering with evidence in McKinley County.

District Attorney Karl Gillson said Largo was also charged with drunken driving in Cibola County because he was under the influence of alcohol when he was arrested by authorities.

Gillson helped officers obtain a warrant to search Largo’s vehicle, person and residence for evidence related to the case.

Gillson said Largo is a former officer with the Navajo Police Department. Largo’s arrest fell on the same day McKinley County police officers were honored for their service during a ceremony at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Gallup.

“It’s ironic and tragic,” Gillson said.

The firearm used in the attack has not been recovered. Marble said the victim’s gunshot wounds were from a small-caliber weapon.

Authorities said Largo has not given a statement about what led to the shooting.

“It’s early in the investigation,” Marble said.

Largo will be arraigned on the murder and tampering with evidence charges Wednesday morning in McKinley County Magistrate Court.
