Seniors’ trek to fitness
starts next week

GRANTS — The Cibola Senior Center joins other organizations across the nation next week to observe National Senior Health and Fitness Day on Wednesday at the center.

Sponsored by New Mexico Senior Olympics, Cibola Sports and Physical Fitness and the center, the day-long Senior TREK is a health evaluation and educational fair that takes the theme “Fitness is a Journey, Not a Destination.” The state Olympics sponsor TREKs annually throughout the state on the last Wednesday of May to help keep older adults healthy and fit.

The event is open to seniors 50 years old and over free of charge. Events start at 9 a.m. with sign-in and information tables.

Physical therapist and president of Langford Consulting Inc., Marylou Langford, will give the keynote address, “You are your own HMO,” and discuss the health benefits of exercise to open the day’s activities. Langford, who has been a physical therapist for over 30 years and is experience in all areas of the field, may be familiar to many from Cibola Sports and Physical Therapy and other therapy centers in Grants.

Workshops will begin after a refreshment break. Participants can choose from workshops that address men and women’s health issues, managing diabetes, activity after a joint replacement, managing osteoporosis, preventing falls and developing strength. Senior TREK day also includes physical activities in enhanced fitness and disc golf, and sports clinics for shuffleboard and air-gun shooting. Health screenings and information tables will be available from opening until 1:45 p.m. The event will award door prizes, but participants must be present at the drawing to win.

Lunch will be available from the center at 11:30 a.m. at a cost of one dollar for seniors 60 years old and over, and $5 for all others.
