Gallup to face smelly issue By Kevin Killough GALLUP The mayor and council will be getting an update on the situation at the wastewater treatment plant at the work session at 6 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall. At the last city hall meeting, Wastewater Technician Arcenio Chavez raised a stink about working conditions at the plant. He met with the mayor and city manager this week to discuss the problems. Executive Director of Gallup Joint Utilities Lance Allgood will present the update. The city will also discuss awarding a contract to SmithCo Construction for the Gallup-Rural Navajo Water Supply Project Phase I. The city opened the project up to formal bids this past April and received 10 bids. SmithCo was the low bidder in the amount of $3.7 million. The project is one small part of a larger effort to bring surface water to Gallup and relieve the citys reliance on ground water, which may be depleting the aquifers. If youre planning to fire off any bottle rockets this summer, you may want to think twice. Fire Chief Robert Soto will also be on hand at the meeting to discuss the citys plan to enforce the ban on aerial fireworks. There is also a ban on ground audible devices. In other words, just the really fun ones. The council will also discuss the plan for a summer dance program and an agreement and a FY 2007 audit from Judi Starkovich, executive director of the administrative services division. |
