GALLUP — McKinley County Sheriff’s Deputy D.J. Murphy and Sgt. John Trevor-Smith may have saved lives Tuesday night when they arrested a drunken driver.

Stacy Silversmith, 37, of Gallup, had five prior DWI arrests on record when Murphy and Trevor-Smith arrested him about 7:15 p.m. Tuesday. Silversmith had apparently taken a car without permission. While tracking Silversmith in the allegedly stolen car, Murphy noticed that Silversmith was driving too fast and failing to maintain a lane of travel. Murphy initiated his lights and sirens but Silversmith failed to stop.
