Deaths

Donald Daniels Sr.

GALLUP — Funeral services for Donald Daniels Sr., 62, were 10 a.m., today, Dec. 29, at Rollie Mortuary. Edgar Yazzie officiated. Burial was in Tohatchi.

Daniels died Dec. 23, 2009, in Gallup. He was born Feb. 6, 1947, in Fort Defiance, into the Bitter Water People Clan for the Red Running Into the Water People Clan.

Daniels was employed with Gallup Indian Medical Center. He enjoyed tending his horses and was a Dallas Cowboys fan. He was a vietnam veteran.

Survivors include his sons, Calvin Daniels, Donald Daniels Jr., Christopher Daniels, all of Nose Rock; daughter, Doris Daniels of Nose Rock; parents, Claude and Christine Daniels of Coyote Canyon; brother, Leonard Daniels of Tuba City; sisters, Rose Wood, Gladys Wood, both of Coyote Canyon; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

Daniels was preceded in death by his brothers, Herman Daniels, Russell Daniels, Harrison Daniels; parents, Claude and Christine Daniels.

Pallbearers were Donald Daniels Jr., Calvin Daniels, Aaron Wood, Tracey Begay, Benson Begay, Benson Long.

The family received relatives and friends at Churchrock Chapter following services.

Phillip Dawes

FORT DEFIANCE — Services are pending for Phillip Melvin Dawes, 65.

Dawes died Monday, Dec. 28, 2009, in Gallup. He was born July 29, 1944, in Fort Defiance.

A family gathering will be 6 p.m., tonight, Dec. 29, at the Fort Defiance Chapter House.

Rollie Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Larry Irving

PINEDALE — Services are pending for Larry Kenneth Irving, 52.

Irving died Monday, Dec. 28, 2009, in Thoreau. He was born Aug. 5, 1957, in Rehoboth.

A family gathering will be 5 p.m., tonight, Dec. 29, at the Pinedale Chapter House.

Rollie Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Nellie Pinto

CHICHILTAH — Funeral services for Nellie Gloria Pinto, 82, will be 1 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 30, at Rollie Mortuary. Burial will be in family land, Chichiltah.

Pinto died Dec. 25, 2009, in Phoenix. She was born Jan. 1, 1927, in Two Wells, into the Towering House People Clan for the One Who Walks Around People Clan.

Pinto retired from Fort Wingate High School after 20 years as dorm aide.

Survivors include her sons, Mike Marvin of Churchrock, Virgil Pinto of Phoenix; daughters, Maureen Curley, Adrian Pinto, Lawanda Pinto, both of Phoenix, Karen Pinto of Heber City, Utah; brother, Eugene Henderson of Chichiltah; sisters, Gertrude Rondon of Gallup, Ella Mae Arthur of Chichiltah, Dorothy Montano of Gamerco, Angelia Grey of Chichiltah; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.

Pinto was preceded in death by brother, Jerry Henderson; brother, Gilbert Henderson; son, Daryl Pinto.

Pallbearers will be Mike Marvin, Virgil Pinto, Greg Vaillancourt, Percopio Montano, Johnny Greym, Neil Marvin, Craig Pinto.

Edith Sakiestewa

FLAGSTAFF — Graveside services for Edith M. Sakiestewa, 88, were Mondays, Dec. 7, at Citizens Cemetery, veterans section, Flagstaff.

Military honors provided by the American Legion, Post 3; Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 1709; Marine Corps League, San Francisco Peaks Detachment 912; Military Order of Purple Heart, Post 793.

Sakiestewa died Nov. 29, 2009, in Flagstaff. She was born in Phoenix.

Sakiestewa grew up in Old Saw Mill and made her home in Window Rock. She served with the Women’s Auxiliary Corp during World War II.

Sakiestewa was active with the Fort Defiance Good Shepherd Mission. Her hobbies included traveling to foreign countries, sewing, cooking, and entering various competitions at the Navajo Nation Fair. She enjoyed hunting, fishing, and talking with friends.

Survivors include her husband, Victor Sakiestewa; two brothers; two sisters.

Donald Sherman

ROCK SPRINGS — Funeral services for Donald Sherman, 74, will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 30, at Rollie Mortuary, Gallup. The Rev. Patrick will officiate. Burial will be in Gallup City Cemetery, Gallup.

Sherman died Dec. 25, 2009, in Albuquerque. He was born Aug. 2, 1935, in Rock Springs, into the Meadow People Clan for the Ute People Clan.
Sherman attended Indian School in Stewart, Nev., and Sherman Institute, Anndarko, Okla. He worked for the Santa Fe Railroad, ONEO Construction, and a mechanic at Troy’s Auto Sales. Sherman enjoyed watching football and basketball, western movies and rodeos. He also enjoyed bingo and casinos, spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Minnie P. Sherman; son, Sherwood Sherman of Gallup; daughters, Juanita Sherman of Gallup, Verna Lee of Yahtahey, Elouise Lee of Grants; brother, Percy Sherman of Rock Springs; sister, Rita Yazzie of Rock Springs; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.

Sherman was preceded in death by his parents, Wilford Tex Sherman, Annie Sherman; brothers, Austin Sherman, Notah Sherman; sons, Leland Sherman, Preston Sherman, Leroy Sherman, Tommy Sherman Sr.

Pallbearers will be Colbert Sherman, Presley Sherman, Dustin Sherman, Eric Livingston, Jimmy BitLoy, Edward Etsitty.

Rollie Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
