SAN FIDEL — A fundraising event, the “Back to School Dinner and Dance,” is being hosted by St. Joseph’s Mission School on Saturday.

“The dinner and dance will be from 6 p.m. to midnight, at the Knights of Columbus Hall, at the intersection of Roosevelt Avenue and Sakalares Boulevard,” St. Joseph’s Principal David Jiron said.

The fundraiser will help the school afford new windows for classrooms and offices to keep the cold wind from blowing in the winter and hot wind in the summer, Jiron said.

The proceeds from the dinner and dance will also help the school afford to also have some plumbing repairs, he said.
The dinner and dance will cost $8 per adult for both the dinner and the dance, if anyone wants to skip the dinner and just go to the dance, the admission fee is $5, he said.
Children age 8 and under will be charged $5.

Music will be provided by a band from the Pueblo of Laguna, Village Express. The group plays western, rock ‘n’ roll and some Spanish, Jiron said.

Jiron said the menu will include lasagna for the main entree, with salad, vegetables, rolls, coffee and soft drinks. Dessert will be cheesecake, he said.

Anyone wishing to donate cash or services to the school may contact Jiron during school hours at (505) 552-6362.
“The school was built in 1920, so you can imagine what kind of problems we have,” he said.

Some of the proceeds from the fundraiser may also be used to repair the buses that carry students to and from the school and their homes.

The school has two buses with one spare, used as a backup when one of the two main buses breaks down, Jiron said.

St. Joseph’s is a mission school of the Catholic Diocese of Gallup. It serves students from preschool through eighth-grade. Last year there were 86 students at the end of the year. This year the school, is starting with “about that many,” Jiron said. He expects a few, maybe five to six, or more, to enroll in the next week or two, he said.
