Spiritual Perspectives
‘For the Two Are One’

By Kathy Coleman
Special to the Independent

In the Christian tradition, people throughout the world are once again about to celebrate the birth of the beautiful and blessed baby named Jesus — Emmanuel, God With Us.
Immediately after celebrating this special birthday, the Year 2007 begins to wave good-bye and 2008 prepares to shout, “Happy New Year.” What will the coming year be like for us? What will we be like for the coming year? Will we journey through the New Year following God’s way? Will we try to lead Him in ours?

Think about the life journey of Jesus Christ Himself! How He approached every new year, every new day, every new moment! How He breathed each breath in total love and obedience to His Father. If ever there was a theme for His journey, that was it: Love and Obedience!

Jesus, fully human/fully divine, checked everything out with His Father — loved Him more than anything, obeyed Him always. The two walked life’s journey hand-in-hand — together.

Sometime ago I wrote a song in praise of that special union between God, our Father, and His Son, Jesus. I share it with you now, in the hope that it will serve as a model for us to follow as we receive the gift of the New Year. Let us pray that we also journey in love and obedience, hand-in-hand — together.

Close your eyes and we’ll travel.
We’ll be traveling far.
Journey ends at a stable.
We are led by a star.
When I look at the Baby,
Jesus — gentle and mild,
I see the Father. And I see Him as Child.
Close your eyes and we’re walking
By the Jordan with John.
Up ahead we see Jesus.
And He beckons us on.
When He comes from the water,
There’s a voice from above.
I see the Father. And I see Him as Dove.
Close your eyes and we’re standing
On a hilltop somewhere.
It is Good. It is Friday.
And my Jesus it there.
When I see how He suffered,
Loving me as I am,
I see the Father. And I see Him as Lamb.
Close your eyes and we’re kneeling
At the foot of a tomb.
Day of Sun. Day of Rising.
Day of light over gloom.
When I see Him as Victor
Over death — over strife,
I see the Father.
And I see Him as Life.
It is NOW. Eyes are open.
We must travel TODAY.
And my Jesus is with me,
Every step of the way.
When I think of my life now,
All the things He has done,
I see the Father.
For the two are One.
As I gaze at the Father
I behold the Son.
Then again... the Father.
For the TWO ARE ONE.
