Storm may miss Gallup

GALLUP — While parts of New Mexico should expect a blast of winter weather, local residents will only see a few snow flakes here and there, according to a meteorologist for Accuweather.com.

Andy Mussoline forecast little snow and sunny skies in the Gallup area for both Saturday and Sunday, with temperatures in the thirties and forties throughout the weekend.

“It looks pretty quiet right now,” Mussoline said.
However, eastern portions of the state could see snow accumulations of a couple of inches, especially in mountainous regions.

Lt. Darren Soland, of the New Mexico State Police, said the agency is prepared in case the weather deteriorates and road conditions worsen.

“I think we have a good program in place,” Soland said of the agency’s ability to respond to situations that arise in poor weather.

He said signs on the Interstate post warnings by the department of transportation to local motorists. The electronic signs also detail road closures and conditions.

Residents who plan to travel during winter weather should engage in some “pre-trip planning,” Soland said.

He recommends motorists pack a flashlight, a red light warning device such as a road flare, blankets, gloves and bottled water in case of an emergency on the roadway.

“If something does happen, you’re able to make until police arrive,” Soland said.

Motorists should also exercise caution when crossing bridges and overpasses because of the potential for accumulation of ice.

He said roadways have remained relatively clear in recent weeks and that no major accidents have been reported.

Authorities are also in constant contact with road crews in both McKinley and Cibola counties to report dangerous patches of road that require immediate attention.
