GALLUP — A man was killed Monday night when he was struck by an Amtrak train traveling west along a portion of track that runs along west U.S. Highway 66.

Police detectives have yet to identify the individual, Deputy Police Chief John Allen of the Gallup Police Department, said this morning.

The collision was reported at about 9:30 p.m. behind the Comfort Inn on Gallup’s west side. The train’s engineer told police he saw the man walk onto the tracks and sit down facing toward the oncoming train. He was killed instantly.

Authorities suspect alcohol was involved in the incident.
Allen said the Amtrak train stopped for about an hour while authorities completed their investigation.
