GALLUP A 38-year-old Navajo, N.M., man was killed early
Sunday morning in a traffic accident along Mentmore Road.
The victim was identified as Stanley Floratino, according to police
reports. McKinley County sheriff's deputies were called to the scene
minutes after midnight and found Floratino's vehicle in a ditch
just off the roadway. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
Floratino reportedly sustained fatal injuries as a result of the
accident and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Reports indicate
he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Poor road conditions may have contributed to the crash. An officer
described the road as snow-packed and icy in his report about the
accident.
Attempted suicide
A 40-year-old Gallup man tried to kill himself while he was in custody
at the Na'Nizhoozhi Center on Boyd Avenue.
Erin Toadlena-Pablo, a spokeswoman for the Gallup Police Department,
said the man was identified as Key Tadington. Tadington was spending
the night in one of NCI's isolation units for public intoxication,
she said.
An employee later found Tadinghton hanging from his belt inside
the room. He was not breathing when medical personnel arrived on
scene.
Toadlena-Pablo said Tadington was transported to Gallup Indian Medical
Center for treatment. His condition is being monitored by the hospital's
intensive care unit.
Toadlena-Pablo said he may have sustained brain damage as a result
of the suspected suicide attempt.
