PUEBLO OF ACOMA — The annual New Mexico Taxidermy Convention begins Thursday and lasts through Saturday at Sky City Casino Hotel.

Some of the events are open to the public at no cost, including a display of taxidermists' entries for competition which will include elk, deer, birds and more, said association Vice President Carl Chavez.

The purpose of taxidermy is to embody the spirit of the animal in a creation that will last forever, he said.

This, in a way, is a tribute to the animal who gave its life to a hunter.

There will be between 60-80 participants displaying their mounts (animals), he said.

Taxidermists compete in various categories among their own for prizes and the public gets to see the entries which will be on display on Saturday from noon to 6 p.m., and again on Sunday from 9-11:30 a.m., in the Sky City Showroom.

Some of the association's well-known members will be giving special workshops to members only, including Larry Blomquist, of Hammond, La., who will discuss taxidermy sculpting at 7 p.m., Thursday.

John Will, no hometown available, plans to discuss Quick-Rock Habitat Bases on Friday at 10 a.m. and Joe Kaiser, of Jonesboro, Ark., will discuss Flying Mallard Ducks from 3-5 p.m. on Saturday.

Chavez will present a workshop open to the public on Saturday from 1-4 p.m., in the Pinon Conference Room, on Fly-tying, a popular sportfishing hobby. Adults and children are invited to this event.

"We wanted to do something to open this up to the public, so I thought of doing a workshop on fly-tying, something for the kids too," Chavez said.

The competition for awards will be on Friday, where the showroom will be closed to the members and the public and judging will take place, he said.

Anyone wishing to join is asked to simply attend the convention and see one of the members, who can provide information, or go to the association's Web site: www.newmexiconmta.com.

Sky City is located just north of Interstate 40 at Exit 102.
