Future Foundations plans spring activity week

By Jim Tiffin
Cibola County Bureau

GRANTS — Spring break begins Monday for students in the Grants-Cibola County schools and Future Foundations Family Center has activities planned each day.

"Solar Extravaganza," is the theme of the week, and Regina Jaramillo, administrative assistant and program manager, said most of the activities follow the solar system-based theme.

Each morning, from 8 to 10 a.m., there will be crafts available at different stations set up by the center's staff allowing youth to participate in making "big marker" bookmarks, yarn projects or working with beads, Jaramillo said.

Beginning at 10 a.m., each day, there is a different theme for the day.

Monday: Air balloons youth will be able to create balloon heads and decorate them.

Tuesday: Flying saucers where youth at the center will take paper plates, decorate them and throw them like Frisbees, making them fly like flying saucers.

Wednesday: Creating rainbow wands youth will take half a paper plate, decorate it and place streamers at both ends.

Thursday: Rockets youth will build rockets and shoot them into the air.

Friday: Bumper pool tournament youth from kindergarten through eighth-grade may participate in a bumper pool tournament.

Lunch and outside play is each day from noon to 1:30 p.m.

Beginning at 2 p.m. each day there are different physical games scheduled, such as Man from Mars and Ring Saturn.

Man from Mars is like the Simon Says game where one person tells a group what to do, but if the direction is not preceded by a saying, like "Simon Says," then the person who competes the direction is eliminated from the game.

Ring Saturn involves Hula Hoops and balls, Jaramillo said.

On Thursday, from 1:30-5 p.m.. and on Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., is a three-on-three basketball tournament in the gymnasium.

From 2-4 p.m., on Monday and Wednesday, there are cooking projects in the center's kitchen.

On Monday youth will make star cookies and on Wednesday they will make "edible rocks," Jaramillo said.

From 5-9 p.m., each night is open adult gymnasium.

Youth must register for spring break activities at the center, 551 W. Washington Ave.
