Highway hazards ...: ABOVE: Gallup firefighter check on Albuquerque
based truck driver Richard Mathews after he jack-knifed the truck
he was driving Thursday along I-40 near the Munoz Overpass in Gallup.
Mathews reported that another vehicle had been driving erratically
and cut in front of him before suddenly braking hard, forcing him
to swerve onto the shoulder to avoid colliding with the other vehicle.

face which had a large bump on her check Thursday afternoon at the
scene of a weather related accident in the westbound I-40 lanes
between exit 20 and 16. Carpio was a passenger in the sport-utility-vehicle
that lost control while traveling in the eastbound I-40 lanes and
further spun across the median into the westbound oncoming traffic.
The driver of the vehicle, Juan Ortega stated that while passing
a tractor-trailer in the heavy rain, he applied the brakes because
he could not see. Subsequently the vehicle began to hydroplane and
spin out of control. [Photo by Daniel Zollinger/Independent]
