Forest Service burns area south of Grants

By Mike Marino
Cibola County Bureau

GRANTS — Smoke was rising in the sky yesterday and unlike the disaster filled skies in Southern California this was a prescribed burn by the Mount Taylor National Forest District. This is the time of year the skies of New Mexico will have rising smoke as the forest service burns prescribed areas to clear vegetation to reduce hazardous fuel and as benefit to the eco resources of the forests.

Yesterday’s burn was at an area known as 425 in the Zunis and smoke was seen for miles. On Saturday there will be another burn of 152 acres near the bat cave at El Calderon so the hiking area will be closed for that day. El Calderon is 23 miles southwest of Grants on N.M.

Highway 53 at mile marker 65. This is expected to be a one day burn dependent on weather conditions and winds.
