Ceramics show is western New Mexico’s largest

GRANTS — Ceramic artists from Pine Hill to Lobo Canyon have fired-up their kilns to create a mosaic of ceramic art to be displayed at The Cibola Arts Council/Double Six Gallery through Oct. 14.

The ceramics on display are not just any ceramics, but western New Mexico’s largest ceramic arts show. The gallery will host a special reception today from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Cibola Arts Council/Double Six Gallery as they once again roll aesthetic marbles through Oct. 14 at the gallery.

The explanation of rolling aesthetic marbles was summed up by Robert Gallegos of the Arts Council. He said the art of ceramics is ancient, and each step in the pottery process is different, from the glazing processes to the firing techniques that affect the look and feel of the finished piece. What is seen on a finished piece is the glaze and its reactions to the clay body, other glazes used in the process, heat reductions and chemical reactions that take place inside the kiln.

This will be the first ceramic event of its kind at the Arts Council that will include the work of four Pine Hill artists, three from Magnolia Cottage and one from Lobo Canyon.
