GALLUP — Gallup has released a new coin as a promotional tool for the city. The bronze-colored coin, which is about the size of a silver dollar, features a thunderbird on the front surrounded by the words "City of Gallup." At the top is the founding year 1881. The back shows the state seal.

It's for dignitaries, retiring employees and such," City Manager Gerald Herrera said.

It's to remind them of Gallup.

The coins will also be used at the state Legislature during Gallup Day. In the past, the city provided people with legislative packets, which contained lapel pins. Herrera said that they will add the coins to the packets.

A total of 500 were produced.
