Sanostee shooting victim is ID’ed

SANOSTEE (AP) — The FBI has identified a 44-year-old Sanostee man who was allegedly shot to death by Navajo tribal police after a car chase.

The victim’s name was Leroy Henderson, according to the federal agency.

FBI Agent Steve Marshall said at least 11 shots were fired in the altercation in Sanostee Saturday morning after Henderson, who was the driver, struck an officer with the vehicle. The officer didn’t suffer serious injuries.

The Navajo Department of Public Safety has not identified the two tribal officers involved in the shooting.

The department’s division director, Samson Cowboy, did not return calls for comment Wednesday.

The FBI is not investigating actions of tribal officers because no allegation of excessive force was made following the shooting, Marshall said.
