GRANTS — The Cibola Arts Council will open their new display of pottery and ceramic art today at the Double Six Art Gallery and Museum in Grants.

Work from local artists and well-known New Mexico potters will be on display for the grand opening of the exhibit from 1 p.m. till 4 p.m. in the front gallery of the downtown art space.

Among the 14 tables of display, visitors will find tiny pieces of whimsy and miniaturization and center piece-sized glazed ceramics including works to hold things, cook in or simply look at.

The real eye-popper is a 12-inch tall terra cotta and black pot by premiere Zuni potter Agnes Peynesta. This pot is priced at $600 and will appeal to the true collector, but Peynesta provided small items of equal mastery at prices ranging from around $20 up, including one of her wonderful lizard seed pot-type black and white pieces.

Scott Goewey, potter and sculptural potter who shows throughout the state, is know for complex and subtle glazes. Goewey’s work for this exhibit include neutral colored miniature pots and urns, at a miniature price, as well as larger vases and pots and sculptural pieces.

Many will recognize the work of local ceramicist Maika, who has a large set of works on display for the exhibit.

All works are for sale; visitors will find art pieces to fit any budget and many household needs, and, of course, the satisfaction of looking at handmade art.

Gallery Director Robert Gallegos said that snacks will be provided, but not the traditional wine of art openings. “We are on city property,” he explained. But visitor can expect coffee and finger food while they view the exhibit and talk to artists and other art supporters.

The exhibit runs from today until the end of October, Gallegos said.
