Gregorio Leyba

BELEN — Viewing for Gregorio Leyba, 67, will be 5-6 p.m. today, Tuesday, Oct. 21, in the chapel of Riverside Funeral Home of Belen, 418 W. Reinken Ave. Recitation of The Most Holy Rosary will be 6 p.m. Final viewing will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church, with the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Interment will be at a later date.

Leyba died Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008, in Belen. He was born in 1941.

Leyba moved to Belen in 2004 from Gallup. He enjoyed reading, working crossword puzzles and fishing and he retired from the New Mexico State Highway Department. He was always ready to help anyone who needed it and was loved by all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife, Trinnie Leyba of Belen; daughter, Roxanne Villanueva of Los Lunas; son, Michael Leyba of Gallup; brother, Pete Leyba; sisters, Debbie Gurule, Mary Maes, Margie Armijo and Kydia Gurule; eight grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Augustine Armijo, Abel Lucero, Chris Martinez, Fred Otero, Renaldo Garnenez, Pete Leyba, Frank Maes, Jr. and Raymond Carbajal.

Ruth Thomas

IYANBITO — Funeral services for Ruth Thomas, 75, were 10 a.m., today, Oct. 21, at the Cope Memorial Chapel. Francis Shirley officiated. Burial was in family plot, Iyanbito.

Thomas died Oct. 15, 2008, in Gallup. She was born March 24, 1933, in Iyanbito, into the Sage Brush Hill People Clan for the Black Streak Wood People Clan.

Thomas was a homemaker, and loved to do beadwork. She was known for her weaving in the LA times and two shows.

Survivors include her son, Victor Thomas of Las Angeles, Calif.; daughters, Velma Silver of Albuquerque, Valaria Thomas of Los Angeles, Annebelle Thomas of Los Angeles, Fannie Aguilar of Visalia, Calif., Marjorie Thomas; brother, Ernest King of Iyanbito; sisters, Easter Sam of Iyanbito, Etta Benally of Iyanbito, Jeanette Johnson of Iyanbito, Shirley Kee of Los Lunas, Renee Sandman of Iyanbito, Lavonda Cadman of Albuquerque; 15 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren.

Thomas was preceded in death by her husband, Jasper Thomas; father, John King; mother, Anna King-Scott; brother, Elton King; sister, Juanita Grey, Angilina King.
Pallbearers were Pete Reyes Sr., Travis Sands, Anthony Thomas, Luis Aguilar Sr., Darrell Joe, Kelly Silver.

The family received relatives and friends at Iyanbito Chapter House, following services.

Cope Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Aaron Mitchell

CHINLE — Funeral services for Aaron Dave Mitchell, 28, will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 22, at the Potters House, Chinle. The Rev. Artie Aragon will officiate. Burial will be in private family plot, Chinle. Visitation will be 10-11 a.m., Oct. 22.

Mitchell died Oct. 17, 2008, in Farmington. He was born March 18, 1980, in Gallup.

Mitchell attended school in Rapid City, S.D. from kindergarten to 1st grade, grade school to high school in Chinle, and San Juan College in Farmington. He majored in diesel mechanics. He was currently employed for Aztec Well Service in Aztec. His hobbies included fishing, weight lifting, camping, motocross, repelling, playing the drums and music.

Survivors include Crystal Jackson; son, Dylan Dave Mitchell; mother, Mildred Dempsey, step-father, Leroy Dempsey; brother, Isaac W. Mitchell; sisters, Adrianne R. Mitchell, Tracie Dempsey, Stacie Dempsey; grandparents, Mary and John Mitchell, Ben Shirley and Louise H. Dedman.

Mitchell was preceded in death Alvina R. Mitchell, Robinson Dave Mitchell; great-grandparents, Tabaha Nez Begay, Mrytle Begay.

Pallbearers will be Isaac W. Mitchell, Josiah Begay, Timothy Claw, Curtis L. Mitchell Sr., Morales I. Francis, Bryan Tsosie.

The family will meet at the Mitchell residence, Chinle.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Potter’s House.

Jean Mariano

MARIANO LAKE — Funeral services for Jean T. Mariano, 89, will be 10 a.m., Oct. 22, at the Cope Memorial Chapel, Gallup. Harry D. Largo will officiate. Burial will be in Rehoboth Cemetery, Rehoboth.

Mariano died Oct. 16, 2008, in Albuquerque. She was born April 19, 1919, in Mariano Lake, into the Start of the Red Streak People Clan for the Salt People Clan.

Mariano was a well-known medicine woman. She performed the Diné traditional blessing way ceremony. She assisted many families performing this healing of mind and spirit when so requested. She also took part in the Enemy way ceremony and yei-be-chie healing ceremony. Mariano was a rug weaver, owned and raised livestock, and enjoyed tending to her cornfield using traditional methods. Her hobbies included participating in social song and dances, spending time with her grandchildren and family members, telling traditional Diné stories and cooking outdoors.

Survivors include her sons, Harrison Mariano of Marino Lake, Harry Mariano of Mariano Lake, Jymn Mariano of Pinedale; daughters, Rita Todachine, Lorraine Mariano, Laverne Mariano, Lorinda Mariano, all of Mariano Lake; 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren.

Marino was preceded in death by Wilson H. Mariano, Ada Navajo, Emma Snyder, Dan Thompson, Mary Washee, Fred Thompson Sr., Roderick Snyder, Fred Thompson Jr.
Pallbearers will be Frederick J. Snyder, Adrian Todachine, Daniel Todachine, Joshua Snyder, Rollen Walthall,
Rodney Walthall.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Mariano Lake Chapter House, following services.

Kathryn Baca

GALLUP — Funeral services for Kathryn “Katie” Helen Baca, 68, will be at Good News Assembly of God Church at a later date.

Baca died Monday, Oct. 13, 2008, in Lake Superior. She was born Dec. 26, 1939, in Ishpeming.

Baca was the daughter of the late Donald and Helen (Tregoning) MacDonald. She was a guidance counselor at the McKinley County Gallup Public Schools in Gallup, where she resided for nearly 30 years.

Survivors include her daughters, Maria Kramer of Negaunee, Elizabeth Thomason, Kris Thomason both of Gallup; sister, MaryAnn MacDonald of Ironwood; seven grandchildren. Baca was preceded in death by her son, Donald Behrens.

Kathleen Wilson

GALLUP — Services are pending for Kathleen M. Wilson, 89.

Wilson died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2008, in Gallup. She was born June 25, 1919, in Mercer, Mo.

Jervis Rowe

TOHATCHI — Services are pending for Jervis C. Rowe, 75.
Rowe died Monday, Oct. 20, 2008, in Gallup. He was born Oct. 30, 1932, in Marysville, Kan.

Nellie Begay

GALLUP — Services are pending for Nellie B. Begay, 65.
Begay died Oct. 19, 2008. Born Jan. 9, 1933, into the Black Streak Wood People Clan for the Salt Water People Clan.
