Two new buildings going up in Grants

GRANTS — Construction is under way on two new buildings slated to house government agencies in Grants.
Walter Meech, a spokesman for BHM, LLC, said the new building drawing at the intersection of Mesa Boulevard and Nimitz Drive will be new headquarters for the Lava, Soil and Water Conservation District, a federal agency now housed on Silver Avenue. BHM will begin constructing on a new building for the Grants office of the New Mexico Motor Vehicles Division in an adjacent site. The Division offices are currently next to the Grants Police Department on Roosevelt Avenue. Work on the Conservation District building began as soon as the required permits cleared Grants Planning and Zoning and the city council late last year.

The federal and state agencies will lease the buildings from BHM, who won the construction job in open bid, Meech added. He said the company will provide landscaping for the buildings and will be responsible for maintaining the structures and grounds for the government tenants.

When completed, the Conservation District offices will be 3,600 square feet and provide 17 parking spaces for the public, as well as reserved spaces for employees. Meech said the Motor Vehicles project will provide 48 public spaces plus employee parking for the 4,000 square foot building.

Meech said he could not provide an expected time of completion because weather and subcontractors always affect the schedule of construction projects. He expects the MVD project to get under way before the Conservation Division project is finished.

Other high visibility construction projects under way in Grants include a tear down and rebuild of the McDonald’s restaurant on Santa Fe Avenue and expansion and improvements to the Human Services complex on Mount Taylor Avenue. These projects are being handled by different contractors and are not related to the BHM, LLC projects.
