Rainaldi will not run again

GALLUP — The big news in the filings for state candidates Tuesday from this area was the decision by state Sen. Lidio Rainaldi, D-Gallup, not to run again for state Senate from District 4.

Rainaldi, who has been in the position for eight years, said he decided not to run for re-election primarily because of health reasons. He did not elaborate.

Irvin Harrison, who was a state representative and then resigned to work for he Public Regulatory Commission, is now back running for his old seat. Thomas A. Garcia, who represents District 1 in San Juan County and Ken Martinez, who represents Cibola County, are the only representative races in this area who is unopposed.

Representative candidates:

  • District 5 (McKinley County) - Irvin Harrison, John Peña, Kevin Mitchell and Sandra Jeff, all Democrats;
  • District 6 (Cibola County) - Eldred Bonekaty, Eliaeo Lee Alcon, and Martha Garcia, all Democrats. R. Grant Clawson, a Republican;
  • District 9 (McKinley County) - Patricia Lundsrom, Peter Watchman, both Democrats.

Senate races:

  • District 3 - John Pinto and Willie Nez;
  • District 4 - Edward L. Smith Sr., George Munoz, Laverne Wyaco, Virginia A. Ballenger, all Democrats.

District Attorney candidates:

  • 11th District - Karl Gillson, the current district attorney for McKinley County, is the only Democratic candidate running. Forrest Buffington, who stepped down as district attorney some 10 years ago to go into private practice, is running as an independent.
