Muñoz unveils run for senate

By Kevin Killough

GALLUP — About 75 people turned out at Sammy C’s Restaurant for a party to announce George Muñoz’s run for senate District 4. Muñoz’s campaign is pledging to support economic development in Gallup, address infrastructure needs, and improve education.

Local businessman and CPA Brett Newberry was among those attending the party. He said that he was “encouraged” by Muñoz’s decision to run, saying that he has the experience necessary to be effective at economic development.

“George has the kinds of connections that I think he’ll be a big help in that area,” he said.

Earlier in the day, Muñoz had attended a Commission on Indian Affairs meeting in Zuni. The commission did not decide whether or not to endorse Muñoz’s candidacy, but members of the commission were at the party to show their personal support for Muñoz. Among those was the Chair of the Commission Lawrence Lucero, who said he couldn’t speak for the commission, but said he felt that Muñoz would be good for Native American issues.

“He made it known (at the meeting) that he’ll be there for Indian people,” Lucero said.

The party attracted a wide range of attendees, including ordinary citizens, Councilor Allan Lavandazo, and Mayor Harry Mendoza.

Minister of the Light House Bill Overton was there to show his support, saying that Muñoz was a family member for years and a “great friend.”

“I believe he has Gallup’s best interest in mind,” Overton said.

Muñoz is a life-long resident and youngest son of the late former Mayor Edward Muñoz. He is the regional economic development coordinator and a local businessman. The district has no Republican challenger, so Muñoz only has to win the June primary to gain the seat.
