Dorothy Acrey

CLOVIS — Graveside services for Dorothy Ann Acrey, 69, were 1 p.m., Saturday, July 18, at Mission Garden of Memories. The Rev. Furgus Tunnell officiated. Burial was in Mission Garden of Memories.

Acrey died July 15, 2009, in Lubbock, Texas. She was born Jan. 7, 1940, in Gallup.

Acrey married in 1961, and that same year she moved to Clovis. She worked as the cafeteria manager at Texico Schools from 1989 until retiring in 2002. She was a member of Night Owls Extension Club and past member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Acrey enjoyed cooking, crafts, garage sales and her club ladies. She was thankful for all the caring people at the Dialysis Center in Clovis.

Survivors include her husband, Raymong Acrey of Clovis; son, Patick Acrey of Clovis; daughter, Kathy Wall of Clovis; brothers, Joe Hill of Gallup, Nick Hill of Michigan; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Jerry Antonio

IYANBITO — Services are pending for Jerry Antonio, 41.

Antonio died Friday, July 17, 2009, in Iyanbito. He was born Jan. 10, 1968, in Crownpoint, into the Two Who Came to Water People Clan for the Salt People Clan.

Jerrick Begay

GAMERCO — Services for Jerrick Wayne Begay, 45, were 10 a.m. today, July 21, at Cope Memorial Chapel, Gallup. The Rev. Dennis Gardner officiated. Burial was in Gallup City Cemetery.

Begay died July 15, 2009, in Scottsdale. He was born Feb. 13, 1964, in Gallup, into the Sleep Rock People Clan for the Towering House People Clan.

Begay attended Washington Elementary, Gallup Middle School, and Gallup High School. He worked for Rico Motor, Tri Star Logging, and Freeway Mobile. He enjoyed playing sports and watching sports, hanging out with family, friends and working on cars.

Survivors include his wife, Lashanda Pinto; daughter, Sonja Ann Tom; father, Bill Begay; brothers, Garrack Begay, Larrack Begay, Darrack Begay, Theodore Chuckie Roanhorse; sisters, Viyella Begay, Sharleen Tom, Joseaphine Roanhorse; grandparents, Francis D. James, Hubbard James.

Begay was preceded in death by his mother, Alberta Roanhorse.

Pallbearers were Steven Damon, Anson Damon, Nathan Damon, Tommy Serna, Amos Lee, Theodore Roanhorse.

The family received relatives and friends at 102 Rosita St., Gamerco, following services.

Joe Manson

TUBA CITY — Funeral services for Joe A. Manson, 79, were 10 a.m., Thursday, July 16, at First Baptist Church, Tuba City. The Rev. Paul Chief officiated. Burial was in Tuba City Community Cemetery. Visitation was Thursday, July 16.

Manson was born Nov. 29, 1929, in Moenave.
Manson was highly decorated and was a Korean War veteran who served in Germany and Seattle.

Survivors include his sons, Ernest Manson of Chandler, Joseph Manson of Flagstaff, Richard Manson of Slovenia, Europe, Daniel Manson of Tuba City, Michael Manson of Hardrock, Kenneth Manson of Flagstaff; daughters, Delphine Chief of Window Rock, Ceita George of Red Lake.

Manson was preceded in death by his son, Victor Hanson.

Pallbearers were Tuff O’Brian, Joseph Manson Jr., Ernest Manson, Raymond Preston, Fredrick Manson, Jestin Manson.

Annie Meese

GALLUP — Memorial services for Annie Ruth Meese, 68, will be 11 a.m., Saturday, July 25, at Bethany Christian Reform, Gallup. The Rev. Keith Bulthuis will officiate.

Meese died July 14, 2009, in Santa Rosa. She was born Sept. 26, 1940, in Ganado.

Survivors include her son, Fred Meese Jr., Robert Meese; brother, Lonnie King; seven grandchildren.

Meese was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Meese; daughter, Gina Meese; mother, Ruth Hubbard.

Calbert Seciwa

ZUNI PUEBLO — Memorial services are pending for Calbert Anders Seciwa, 56.

Seciwa died Monday, July 13, 2009. He was born May 18, 1953, in Fort Defiance.

Seciwa served as the director of the American Indian Institute at Arizona State University from 1989 to 2006, where he played a role in the formation of Arizona Tri-Universities for Indian Education. He spearheaded an initiative to stop the construction of a coal mine that would have negatively impacted the Zuni Salt Lake. While at ASU, he took the lead in an effort that saw the number of Indian students increase from less than 200 to more than 1,300. Since 2007, he served as the director of Institute for Tribal Environmental Professionals at Northern Arizona University, working to assist Indian nations face environmental problems. Before his career with ASU, he was a teacher and school administrator, tribal administrator and co-coordinator of intertribal efforts on issues such as cultural preservation, Indian economic-enterprise programs and infrastructure development. In the 1980s he taught at the Southwest Indian Polytechnic Institute in Albuquerque and also served as chair of the University of New Mexico’s Tribal Enterprises Studies program at the Gallup campus. He took his undergraduate degree in Southwest Indian Studies at Ft. Lewis College in Durango, Colorado, where he obtained his secondary-school teaching certificate. He then attended law school and took part in a unique paralegal training program that resulted in an internship with the Office of Management and Budget in Washington, DC.

Survivors include his wife, Margie Nieto Seciwa; daughters, Chelsa Antonette, Colynn Andrea; six grandchildren.

Tom Silversmith

COYOTE CANYON — Services are pending for Tom Silversmith, 68.

Silversmith died Saturday, July 31, 1940, in Albuquerque. He was born July 31, 1940, in Coyote Canyon, into the Folded Arms People Clan for the Bitter Water People clan.

A community gathering will be 6 p.m., tonight, July 21, at Coyote Canyon Chapter House.
